Author's note: based around a boss convo between Levail and Astrid. I don't own anything. I think Astrid's relationship with all the senators and villains in Begnion is interesting and I love how her character grows in the first game. We see little to none of her in Dawn and I wanted to provide a fake background between her and Levail. Zelgius and Levail is purely a relationship based on respect and admiration, not love, in this short bit. (please don't misunderstand)
I Have Changed!
Astrid readied her bow and took aim at the enemy general. A man she knew all too well. In fact they were childhood friends. They often played together when they were kids. She even told him about her plan to run off and be a mercenary. She remembered how he told her she was crazy and that she should just do what her parents said. At the time she was very hurt. He was one of her closest friends, someone she thought understood her. He basically told her to just live a life of an obeying puppet. That wasn't who she was and she would prove it now.
She released the arrow and it struck Levail's helmet off. He looked in the direction of the arrow and met eyes with her.
"Lady Astrid? Is that you?" The sounds of clashing weapons drowned him out.
"I implore you to please drop your weapon. The goddess is not who you think she is. Can't you see the path you follow is a path of destruction?"
Levail looked at her with fierce eyes never faltering. "This doesn't concern a lady like you Astrid. You shouldn't even have a weapon."
Astrid raised her voice in a way Levail has never heard from her. "No! The Astrid you once knew is no longer! I am a knight of Crimea and I follow my heart and it is telling me that the goddess is wrong. I no longer follow blindly without will, I have truly found myself."
Levail smiled at her. "I am happy for you Astrid. I can see that you have changed. You are indeed strong, let us see if that new will of yours is strong enough. Prepare yourself!"
Levail knew Astrid was right, but he had found something in Zelgius that he had in no other person he had met. He longed to be by his side. Zelgius was his life. He would follow him to the ends of the earth. He would give his life for him. Seeing Astrid brought back such fond memories, but he grew and changed also. He had a purpose and that was to protect Zelgius.
As he fought Astrid he knew it was the end. Almost all of his comrades were dead. He was running on empty. His vision began to blur as he felt a sharp pain in his side. A lance was slowly pulled from his side.
"I'm sorry. I tried Lord….Zelgius."
Astrid held Levail in her arms as the battle ended. Ike had defeated Zelgius. "Don't worry, everything is over now."
Levail looked up at Astrid. "I'm sorry Astrid, I can see you clearly now and I know you have changed."
Astrid began to cry. "Don't strain yourself talking."
Levail reached up and touched her face. "Did he win?"
Astrid's tears were streaming down her face now as she lied to a dying man. "Yes Zelgius won and he is so very proud of you."
Levail smirked. He knew that Astrid lied. "Your compassion hasn't changed."
Astrid felt his hand grow cold and his shallow breathing stopped. Levail was dead. He was a true warrior with his honor and loyalty shining through in the very end. There is no doubt Zelgius and Levail will see each other again. This time they will be happy.
