What is death?
A question without a definitive answer known to most common people, afraid of what the truth gives them. My answer is selective to separate those who don't deserve it and that… is what Humankind fears, selection.
Mine although is only for those who have a contract with a soul, anyone can use it. And that answer is "death is the release of your own soul. If you have any regrets or don't accept your sins, your soul will wander this world until you cease to exist. If you don't regret your choices and accept your sins, then you will earn a new life."
My name is unknown to even myself. Whenever I try to recall my name, all I get is a white blur over it or the sound of a static TV when someone calls me. Everything else is okay. My last memory is of my death. A car accident, I felt no pain but only the strange sensation of walking miles.
A strange sensation due to how little distance was between my home and where the accident took place. But focus on the moment for now, leave questions of the past to the future as the present requests it. Conscious from birth, I felt every little effect of being birthed, but as soon my lungs got filled with the New World's air, fatigue grabs my nape without mercy and forces me to sleep.
It's been two hours since my birth and I am being carried on top of something with fur, after 6 minutes it stops and I slid down its body and got coiled around something warm, I feel my body getting tired and go to sleep with the clue that whoever carried me was a quadruped animal.
…
A day passed since my birth and somehow I found out how to cry out for food. It seems like there is a caretaker here, but she/he makes no noise so I never noticed until my own stomach began to punish me for not even trying.
A cold and wet feeling is felt below my stomatch, pushed up to something to get carried away to somewhere. Somewhere where I felt my mother's presence, even though I couldn't see anything beyond the Abyss created by my heavy eyelids.
With only my mouth reaching her, I try to get closer, try to find any hints of what this "motherly" presence was like, but my instincts got the better of me, getting my stomach full without even reaching my Mother once and get carried away, back to where I was before.
Minutes pass, my surroundings cry out, cries imitating mine when hunger hit me, some low pitched others higher, but ever the same. One by one, the surroundings turn quiet and I feel the cold hard ground against my body as I am left with a hint, those who cried just now were my brothers and I slept with them and without them, my body got colder as I doze off to the next day.
…
Five to six days pass by with the same repeated events, feed, sleep, repeat. My eyelids finally listen to my orders and I could see something else other than the darkness created by myself, instead dissapointedly, I stare the darkness of the caves housing me instead.
Today I woke up because of the noise coming from the darkness of the cave and a dim light appears far away in front of me after time passes by. Surprise fills my heart
After some time, I see a dim light far away and soon enough I get surprised at what I see. Four wolves in the same size as a Human, with the silence in the cave, they walked towards us as a small orb of light guides them.
Light finally arrives near us, and I see for the first time the one who took care of me and my brothers, a caretaker in the same size as the wolves with a black line wrapping his neck like a spring which ends in between his ears as his grey fur displayed it with ease in the dim lightning.
The one who wakes up the Caretaker is one meter and sixty feet brown wolf with white lines travelling his body from his tail into his front paws, he's smaller than the Caretaker and the other Wolves, but still was too big for the ones I saw once in my previous life. But it seems two-meter height Wolves are a norm in this world as well Magic.
One of the wolves, with jet black fur, has an enourmous scar around his neck, almost as if he survived a badly prepared execution but without care for it, he breathed ever so gentlely while paying attention to the Brown Wolf in front of him while the White wolf beside him almost escaped my eyes due to how little presence he has while having a left blind eye.
Without being able to see another Wolf behind those two, they all begin to make their way towards us as Caretaker stands up. When the light orb stops on top of me and my Brothers, the Wolf was finally visible, but he was just a grey Wolf, but with glowing runes in an unknown language in its chest.
Behind the two, there is a grey wolf that has my attention, because beside him, there is the dim light at a size of a pinball and on its chest it has in unknown language runes that are glowing.
Even though the light was above us, the Jet black and White wolves pass by us without a glance to somewhere behind me, without being able to move my body, it is impossible for me to know where they were going. But without putting all of my attention into them, I instead paid attention to myself.
Where fingers, grown to kill and sow destruction, palms, to let blood flow through, wrists, to have a brid to end it all, paws instead took its place. I am, a wolf like the ones surrounding me, like the ones I sleep on top of and call brothers, yet different with dark blue fur as I could easily see my brothers being nowhere the same in the corner of my eyes as I barely could twitch my head to where I wanted.
My Caretaker and the two Wolves surround me, for a straight minute, they stared above me, but I quickly catch the attention of the grey Wolf. At first, he forces me to close my eyes due to him smelling me, he looks at my Caretaker and seems to call for him.
Strangely, I could conceive emotions from their faces and one of those emotions was surprise in the faces of the Grey and Brown wolves as they glanced between me and my Caretaker, who seems to be used to me, an white dot in a black canvas. When silence settled for a little, the Grey wolf approaches me, without hesitation while having his eyes closed, he lowers his head to touch his forehead with mine. As I stared his closed eyelids, the runes in his chest glowed light blue as I felt a small shock in my head and a voice in my head soon followed, almost confusing me of it being my own thoughts.
-Hello? Can you understand me?
Telepathy, used to it, yet surprised to see a non-contractor as well non-human creature use it. Even though a feeling in my chest asked me to not answer, the urge for knowledge pushed me forward and I answered it with my own thoughts.
-Yes!
With my answer, the Wolf conveys utter surprise as he takes a few "steps" back as he looked at me. After a glance behind him due to doubt in his head, I presume, he continues with his Telepathy.
-Little one do you know your mother?
-No…
An answer given immediately after the question, no need to hold back now, ignore the feeling of wanting to stay quiet. Troubles come with answers and answers bring trouble. Even though I opened my eyes today, hunger still didn't hit me, causing me to cry out for my Caretaker, meaning I didn't know about my mother.
-I see…
A grim observation in his voice could be easily be conveyed, even though, we are talking through our minds.
-Is… There something wrong?
His eyes open, hesitation clear as he stares me into my eyes. But soon, it goes away and he answers me while closing his eyes again.
-You see Little one, your fur is not the color of our pack.
-Oh…
Troubles urge from the horizon already, yet no answers. An obvious trouble when I look upon myself and compare with my Brothers but too early for my taste still… as attention is last thing I seek, especially hateful attention. So, I do question about it in a tone which could be conveyed as serious in my head.
-Is my fur color hated by our pack?
The wolf stops Telepathy for a third time, but this one, he stops to glance at the Brown Wolf beside him. After watching the Wolf's expression filled with curiosity, he continued with Telepathy and answered me in a calm tone.
-Much to contrary to your worries little one. Your fur is the color of the neighbor pack which we used to trade information.
Past tense, confusing me and forcing me to question it due to my attention.
-Used?
He opens his eyes and takes a deep breath to prepare his own heart to answer my question. Leaving a clear answer without any words.
-You see litt-
-I know
-… know what?
-They are dead aren't they?
-… Yes
-I see… Since I had no contact with them, I won't mourn over their deaths.
Surprise conveyed in his face again as he kept Telepathy steady, all the while as he stared me I tremble my head as much as possible to sign a nod. Happyness is easily conveyed in his expression and body signs as his tail swings from side to side while looking at me.
He stops Telepathy for one last fourth time and barks at my Caretaker, who began sleeping again, showing how much my Brothers and I exaust him, our numbers, just in my vision, are beyond seven while I stil felt more on my back. He comes to me and places his nose below my belly and gently pushes his nose further into me to place me upon his head, with as much help as I could give. Slowly as gravity could let him, the Caretaker Wolf makes me slide into the Grey's Wolf's back.
-There we go. This way I can use Telepathy without a problem.
He begins to walk as his voice rings in my head and I have my eyes closed due to his fur almost stabbing my eyes. I question him as I could see my brothers behind him.
-Where are we going?
Even though the Grey Wolf seems to need to close his eyes to use Telepathy, the corridor is straight, meaning there's little to no danger and his attention can be on my questions.
-To deep inside the Great wolf cave.
-Great wolf cave?
Even though I could feel his neck twisting, I could only see him in the corner of my eye due to my position on top of him. With a calm tone of voice, the Wolf answered me in Telepathy as excitement easily appeared in his "face".
-The Great wolf is a pack member back when I was just a little older than you. He brought great hunts to the pack when we were low on males to hunt; he alone hunted the big monsters of the area to feed the pack.
-I see. So the pack named this cave on his name?
-Yes. Because here is where he first fought his first prey, a monster called Wind Bear.
-I see…
Going back to having his eyes on the corridor as he walks, we end up in an open space with the Jet black and White Wolves ahead of us in the middle of it, what they were facing was a giant centipede, twice their size with black shells and white jaws and legs as a red fluid dripped from its mouth.
When he stops walking and begins to watch the fight unfold, the Brown Wolf which was behind us runs past us towards the Centipede. Runes appear in his neck as he jumps with fangs cladded in flames, with his teeth digging deep into the Centipede, he holds on to it as it squirms in pain.
With the struggle of the Centipede, the Brown wolf gets swung across the open space but the Jet black and White wolves don't just stand and watch like us, instead, they begin to hold on to multiple of its numerous legs, making sure the centipede couldn't move from its spot and let it use a wall to get out the Brown Wolf's hold. With his head frantically shaking to dig his teeth deeper into it and as well the force of the Centipede's struggle, it soon dies as flames burns it insides.
-Are you guys going to eat it?
My stomach twists as I let out a question as the Grey Wolf's orb of light finally catches up to us. The red fluid comes out of it's mouth plenty as the skin was clear to see to be burnt from the inside.
-No. This monster has poison on its guts. We came to eradicate it because of the rumor that a fierce monster got born inside this cave. We use this cave to test newborns.
-Oh… What do you mean, test newborns? Do you mean me and my brothers will be tested?
-Yes. But one by one, so you are going alone to hunt here for monsters of your level to evolve so you can grow.
-Evolve?
-Yes, we are monsters, unlike the humans. We don't grow without killing a monster to evolve into monsters that can have classes. Like me! I am a Sage class, I know lesser heal spells and some utility spells and I learn things faster because of the expanding knowledge of this class. Do you see the brown wolf, Meritios? He is a Magic Combatant class. He knows elements spells that boosts his fangs on wind, thunder and fire, while he got a height problem, he got faster than any members of the pack.
-And the other two?
-The black fur one, Kilitio is a Tank class. He is much more resistant to physical attacks and the white with the blind eye, Camio, is a Scout class. He has a blind eye because of the spell he uses, Heat perception that makes his eyes look blind, and he has Stealth and he is resistant to magic and poison attacks. And your lookout Pomeri has no class yet because of his choice, to lookout for the supplies and newborns.
-I see…
As the wolves are coming this way, my body gets tired and I feel my conscious fading.
-Sorry… I will sleep on your back…
-Sleep tight little one.
When I hear this, I yawn and for some reason the light goes out and I go to sleep without noticing the sudden change.
