Nutmeg's Dream

The ginger tom stood upon a rock so high it seemed to scrape the sky. The rock over looked an open dirt area surrounded by 4 great oak trees. The sky above is a deep blue dotted with stars. A full moon sent a silver glow on the great trees and the ginger tom.

The tom started walking closer to the edge of the rock and a shear drop straight to the cold dirt far below. Nutmeg tried to run but she was held in place forced to watch.

"Stop! Don't go closer the drop is very far!" Nutmeg yowled as loud as she could but the tom didn't stop. He kept walking till one more step would mean plummeting to the ground.

"Go back! Don't jump!" Nutmeg pulled harder at the force that held her down. The tom tucked his hind quarters underneath him and bunched his muscles.

"Stop! No don't do it!" she lurched forward but it was too late. The ginger tom jumped and flew into the starry sky. She ran to where he would hit the ground but when Nutmeg looked up, he was gone.

"NOOO!" she howled at the sky till her voice cracked and she broke onto a coughing fit. She hooked her claws into the dirt to hold steady. The smell of smoke hit her nose and she felt heat on her back. Nutmeg whipped around to see a wall of fire bearing down on her. The flames blotted out the stars and the full moon blazing silver in the sky. She ran toward the rock the tom jumped from and scrambled to the top.

The smoke stung her eyes and now it was surrounding her. A wind rustled the burning leaves of the great oaks and Nutmeg looked down to the hard dirt below.

"Fire alone can save our Clan" she looked up and was face to face with a blue gray she-cat. She was floating and her pelt is made of hundreds of tiny stars and star dust. Her eyes were blue stars with deep dark centers full of wisdom. The blue gray cat dipped her head and turned walking up an invisible trail in the night sky.

"Come back tell me more!" Nutmeg called after her but she was gone. The flames were also gone and a steady rain begun to fall. She looked down and below was a raging river. Hot sticky breath barred down on her neck. She whipped around and saw a large brown dog.

It large brown head was bigger than any other dog she has ever seen. It pulled back its lips and showed long white fangs. She stepped back and lost her footing she gasped and fell toward the river below.

"Fire alone can save our Clan" she heard the voice again and hit the freezing cold water.

Nutmeg woke with a start. She looked around. No rock. No great oaks. No river, fire, or dogs. She was safe in her house and warm cozy cat bed. She licked her swollen belly.

Nothing will hurt my kits. You will always be safe with me. She mentally told the unborn kits. You won't stand on the rock or be chased by dogs or be burned by fire. You will be safe.

But the grey cats words still echoed in her head. Fire alone can save our clan.
