Spring

A determined frown refused to leave his handsome face. It sat there, unmoved by the beauty surrounding him. The sadness that this place caused his bruised heart was unbearable. Cynicism filled his mind. Time was the cruelest of all villains. Unstoppable, it moved forward without remorse or conscience, weaving itself around everything, binding you to its will. Slowly you changed, the people you loved changed, then the cruelest joke of all. You find yourself standing in the cherry orchard where nothing had changed.

The ancient trees with low sweeping branches blushed with rosy pink petals. Happy bumblebees tumbled from petal to petal drunk from the sweetness of each blossom. Their happiness would be as short lived as his had been. The blooms would quickly give way to time, wither, and die. A sweeter fruit would replace them, but it would be unobtainable to the buzzing bees. Keith snorted, at least they could move on find new flowers.

This place, why did it seem untouched by time? Tears were stinging his eyes when he saw her. She stood exactly were she had that day. Twisting blossoms in to her golden hair, a halo of them sat on her crown. Her gown was the same blushing pink as the trees surrounding her. Slowly he crossed the meadow that separated them. Why was she doing this to him, and why here?

Sensing his approach, she turned her beautiful green eyes toward him. He faltered and stopped. Time had reach out its tendrils and touched this place. She wasn't his blue-eyed princess. The one who had loved him so. This was the green eyed Queen who time had replaced her with. Sweeter and more beautiful than he dreamed she would be, but also stronger and colder than he ever imagined she could be.

She closed the space between them. Looking up into his sad blue eyes, she shook her head slightly, a gentle frown curving the bow of her sweet lips. Raising her right arm, she opened a compartment in her Voltcom, and removed a small glittery object.

"NO! Don't you dare! I will not take it back, Allura. Not one kiss, not one I love you, not one moment of time will I take back." Tears were streaming down his face.

She cupped his hand in hers and lifted it to her lips. Forcing his fingers open by kissing them gently, she softly kissed his palm then laid the ring in his trembling hand.

Her own tears were falling now. She laced her fingers in his, trapping the diamond between them. With a tear- filled voice she said, "Oh my love, if you didn't build such impossibly thick walls, I wouldn't be forced to so ruthlessly tear them down."

Wrapping his arm around her, he pulled her close and whispered, "Allura, so much has changed and so many things have happened. We are not the same two people who stood in this orchard six years ago."

She lifted their entwined hands and let go of his. Her engagement ring glowed in the mellow afternoon light. "I am still Allura, and you are still Keith."

In those tear-filled green eyes, he only saw love and tenderness. He slipped the ring on her finger and asked, "When summer has almost ended and the fireflies have returned to the meadow, will you be mine forever and all time?"

Tenderly she whispered, "I am yours always, and only yours."

He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her with all the passion he had been holding back. He would not waste more of their time on needless worry and selfishness.

The sunbeams caught in the golden threads of her hair. The bees hummed around the blossoming flowers. A sweet scented zephyr gently cooled his hot bare skin. Out of long habit, he scanned the endless azure sky before drifting off to sleep. Entwined in his arms were memories of days long ago and dreams of days yet to be. He had conquered time; forced it to stand still.
