Hello there. You may have seen a story with this same title, and I assure you that I have gained full permission to rewrite this story from the original creator. If you're wondering who that is, he is Eiji-san. I will provide a link to his profile and the original story at the end of the chapter.
Since this is a rewrite, obviously there will be changes. The original idea that Rito was never human but rather a powerful sub-species of them will be kept intact. I'm only changing elements of the story and other things. Somethings might stay, others won't, somethings will stay the same or similar, some elements may disappear entirely. By the way, the entirety of the story will be told in third person. I won't have any perspective changes.
Please give me your thoughts in a review, and I hope you enjoy.
CHAPTER 1
Rito woke up lying in a pool of cold sweat. He had a headache that made his head feel like it was a gateway to the underworld, and all hell was about to break loose. The blinding light from the morning su-, wait. It was the middle of the night. So why was everything so damn bright? His vision was a bright green, making him shut his eyes closed as much as possible and cover his face with his palms.
Water. Need, Water.
That's right! A good glass of water and a couple splashes across the face would fix everythi-, wait. Who said that? He looked around but found nobody to be the perpetrator. Whatever. He probably was talking to himself. It was the middle of the night after all and he wouldn't exactly be the most sensible. With that, he got out of bed still rubbing his eyes, using his other hand to guide him.'
To your right, down the hall.
Again. He heard a voice and wasn't exactly sure if it belonged to him, but whatever. He was probably just subconsciously retracing his steps. Nothing to freak out about. He walked through the doorway and followed the directions to the bathroom, still covering his eyes. Reaching out for the hot water pipe, he was interrupted by the voice,
Cold. Use cold water.
O-kayyy, now he know something was up. He quickly darted around confused, but still saw nothing. Ughhh, whatever. It didn't matter. He'd deal with it in the morning, this headache was getting harder to deal with by the second. Stressing himself out over a faint voice in the middle of the night was pretty stupid. He continued, still following the voices directions to use cold water. He had a premonition that disobeying could lead to some unfortunate issues. When he was finished he looked into the mirror. Instead of the usual brown eyes he had, he noticed they were becoming a light shade of emerald green. Although his vision had cleared up, from an outside view they were still green, like Lala's. Weird. He stared back at his reflection for a solid 7 seconds, before he noticed a peculiar lock of hair in the sink.
He slowly picked it up and studied it. It looked like a combination of his hair color and Mea Kurosaki's. The bottom was a dark red color and the top half was brown, like his. Also pretty weird. Had Mea snuck into their house to use their bathroom? No that doesn't... make any sense. Was he stupid. Ughh! Who cares! He would just go to sleep and figure it out in the morning...
Rito woke up lying in a pool of cold sweat, AGAIN. The headache from before hadn't exactly disappeared, he only felt slightly better. His eyes didn't hurt at all anymore so that was good, although the sun still shined as bright as ever. It was time to wake up, and he couldn't complain.
Waking up, he headed to the bathroom to brush his teeth, meeting Lala and the 2 other girls who were in the process of doing so. He glanced into the mirror, then looked away, then looked back into it with a more surprised look. "Huh!?"
The 3 girls looked at him confused and they all shared a collective gasp at his suddenly changed appearance.
His eyes were now completely emerald green now, so he shared that trait with the girls. His hair was golden brown at the scalp and upper parts, but slowly faded into a dark red color at the bottom. Some of them had grown into small upward curls.
Lala was the first to speak up. "Ri-Rito, what happened to you!?"
Rito turned his head to her, "I-I don't know!"
Nana stayed silent, unable to decide whether to show concern for the boy, or continue like nothing had happened. She stood there almost completely still with her toothbrush in her mouth.
Momo started handing out possible answers "M-Maybe it's just a rare trait some humans have?" She gave a shrug and an assuring grin, "I'm sure it just happened to flare up now, I mean, Humans don't even know everything about themselves. It COULD be a mutation of sorts, I'm sure you'll be fine Rito!"
That didn't really seem to calm Rito down but Lala almost immediately bought into it. "She's right Rito! I bet you're a super rare specimen, I don't think it's anything to worry about."
Nana finally decided to speak up, giving a neutral answer, "Either way, we won't find out what it is, we should go to Ms. Mikado." The toothbrush was still in her mouth, she spoke with a bored tone and a straight face.
They all agreed with Nana and Rito started to calm down a little bit. "I hope it had nothing to do with that voice, or the headache." He thought to himself.
After finishing up the morning rituals and explaining the situation to Mikan, they had all left and went headed to school, hoping for the best.
Rito had barely gotten through the front gates and he could already feel everyone giving him confused stares and frantic whispering. He sighed and continued walking through the halls. He'd have to endure this until freetime when he could go to Mikado without being scolded by Kotegawa for roaming the halls. As soon as he entered his classroom all conversation stopped and all eyes were now on him. Some looked confused some stared blankly. It was an awkward situation which he tried to defuse by acting casual. He walked over to his seat next to his best friend Saruyama, hoping for a getaway, but even he was looking at him awkwardly.
No one said anything. Rito quickly looked around hoping for an answer to his predicament. Nothing came to his rescue.
He decided to try to say something. "What?"
It worked, thankfully. People began to look away and went back to their own business, while waiting for the teacher to come.
"God please help me..." Rito thought to himself. He sighed and looked down.
The ring of the bells signaled freetime, meaning Rito was finally able to go to the nurse. By then, his condition had worsened. His were now glowing slightly becoming more Charmian-like by the second. His hair had continued to warp in shape and color. It became less spiky and a bit more curly with the red color becoming more bright and prominent.
He entered Nurse Mikados room, who was sitting in an office chair playing with Celine. She looked up at him with the same surprised look the others had before. "Well, they told me the situation but I- wasn't expecting this."
Rito gave a nervous look and scratched the back of his head, "W-well, do you know what's wrong with me."
He takes a seat on a chair, allowing Mikado to give an inspection. She studied his eyes carefully, then his hair.
After a few minutes of this, she finally says,"I don't want to make any big assumptions yet, but I'll just say this. You might not be as human as you think you are."
Those words made his heart drop. He didn't fully understand why but, he was afraid. It wouldn't be such a big deal to be an alien right? After all it would explain a lot of things weird in his life. His inhuman speed, his amazing stamina, his physics-defying falls, especially the last one.
Mikado tries to lighten the mood, "Well i won't know for sure until I take a look at your DNA. So I'll run a blood test, we'll see what happens? It'll take a day or 2, so just sit tight."
