The year was 1990 and Egon was busy looking over the data of his experiment on the behaviour of bees in response to a rare chinese fungi when Janine entered his work area. He dropped the papers in his hands and rose, facing her. He grew nervous at the sight of her face. The emotion presented in her features was anxiousness and he noticed how her fingers were folded together nervously.
"Janine? Are you alright", He asked. He was concerned but still spoke with an even tone of voice that came from growing up in an emotionally void household full of straight edge scientists.
Walking over to her, she kept her eyes down to the floor. That concerned him further. They had decided to start dating about two months ago, a little bit after they had defeated Vigo the Carpathian and saved New York City from the tyrants plans. They were still working to grow the relationship and Janine was educating him in the process of dating since Egon had never experienced having a girlfriend.
And with that came Egon having to learn to express his emotions, which was harder said than done. Early childhood conditioning and a lack of emotional growth meant it would be a challenge to change his ways. But he told Janine he would try for her because he really did love her. He loved her more than anyone in his life. He just had a hard time showing it to her.
Is she breaking up with me?, He suddenly wondered. Was his attempt to change his persona not enough? Did she decide that Louis Tully was a better choice over him. His anxiety suddenly spiked in that very moment and his chest began to hurt. It was a reaction he had never experienced before.
"Janine... please tell me whats wrong", He suddenly begged with worry.
She finally looked up at him, her green eyes sparkling with water as her tears fell and a smile formed on her lips. "Egon... im pregnant."
The air around him froze and he felt as his eyebrow shot up in surprise. He glanced down at her stomach, where her hand was now pressed. He tried to breath steadily despite his racing heartbeat.
"Your... your certain", His voice wavered slightly.
Her smile fell suddenly. No, he scolded himself. Had he said the wrong thing. This was not a moment in which he should spoil with his inept social skills.
Her voice was shaky. "Ya, of course. Your not...mad are you."
At the sight of her sadness, Egon felt his chest grow heavier.
"No. No of course not", He placed his hands lovingly on her shoulders. He looked into her watery green eyes. "You dont have to be nervous Janine."
"I know", She cried. "But you dont look happy."
"I am happy, it's just that your news is extremely... unexpected."
She chuckled without humor. "Well how do you think I feel."
Then she began to ramble. "Egon... we've only been dating for a couple of months and I know your not too keen on the idea of kids. And then I found out that the birth control pills I were on were faulty and the next thing I know theres a pregnancy test in my hands that says positive and..."
"Slow down Janine," He interrupted her. "Its ok."
She took a breath and fell into his arms. He accepted her, their warmth combining together as one.
"Egon... do you want to have children?", She asked.
The question was something he had never really took the time to think about. Since he had such a strenuous relationship with his own parents and had been emotionally neglected for most of his life, he figured he would be unable to raise children properly. He feared he would just be an echo of his own father. Science was his life and he figured it would always be that way. But now as he stared at the woman he loved, picturing the life growing inside her at that very moment, he felt like he could be a father. He wanted to be a father.
"Yes Janine. I do", He said confidently. "However, I also want to make sure your happy as well. Are you comfortable with having children?"
She raised her head and looked into his eyes with confidence. "Yes. I want to have children with you. I've always wanted that."
Egon nodded, his arms still wrapped around her. He felt as their heartbeats thumped in rhythm with one another. It felt so proper. So... right.
"Well... then I suppose we better invest in all of the essentials for a newborn baby."
Her smile returned and she lunged at Egon, her soft lips colliding with his. His heart fluttered and he kissed her back. Warmth broke out on his cheeks. No matter how many times they had kissed, Egon always blushed like a boy experiencing his first kiss.
As they pulled away and met each others excited eyes, the siren of the Ecto-1 blared from downstairs. The boys were back and done for the night with their list of clients.
"I guess we should go tell the boys", Janine smiled. They both walked down the stairs, holding each others hand. Janines tiny fingers were wrapped in Egons long ones.
Ray, Winston and Peter all got out of the Ecto-1, their faces full of fatigue and uniforms dirty with ghostly substances.
At the sight of Egon and Janine holding hands, Peter provided his usual playful quips.
"How are the lovebirds today", He smirked, holding a smoking trap in his hand.
Egon smiled. "Well Peter... we are quite estatic."
Ray and Winston listened curiously. "What is it Egon", Ray asked eagerly.
"Janine has discovered she is pregnant", Egon answered.
"We're having a baby!", Janine squealed excitedly. "Your gonna be uncles!"
The boys celebrated joyously.
"Congrats guys", Winston smiled.
"Im gonna be an uncle!", Ray laughed with joy.
"Uncle Peter. Has a nice ring to it. Cant wait to teach the little bugger who Babe Ruth is and how to toss a football", Peter said excitedly. "He can play with Oscar when they eventually gets sighed for the big leagues."
Winston laughed. "Is that your plan Peter."
"Of course", Peter said with a wink. "Im gonna be their manager for sure."
They all laughed together and Egon could feel the happiness in the air. It felt like they were a family and now there would be another person in their lives. Egon couldnt wait.
