She didn't want me anymore? The thought hurt. Burnt even.
I chocked back a sob. She would not see me cry. "Did what we have mean nothing to you?"
Tanya ran her hand through her hair, letting out a breath I didn't know she'd been holding. "No. I never loved you, Edward."
I looked away, my eyes burning. "Can you at least tell me what I did?" My chest felt as though it would burst.
She gave me a coy smile and held her hand against the side of my face. "Nothing that you could have helped, my love." Her voice was soft, like velvet.
It only made me want her more. "Tanya please! I love you," I pleaded, drenched in misery.
"I'm sorry, Edward. It's over. We're done."
I stared into her face, searching for any sign of regret.
I found none.
Tears slid down my cheeks before I could stop them. I couldn't lose her. I was nothing without her. I needed her.
"Please, please don't do this to me."
"It's already done." Without a glance back she walked away, back down the street. And out of my life. I knew I would never see her again.
I felt sick. I had nowhere to go. I owned nothing. She was everything. I was no one now.
I ran, or more stumbled, in the opposite direction to her. I couldn't see through my tears. Rain pelted my back, soaking into my clothing until I was freezing.
Suddenly I tripped, landing hard in the gutter. I felt the skin rip off my hands and the smell of blood hit my nose.
Curling into myself, I didn't have the energy to cry anymore, let alone get up. The idea off lying here and never getting up didn't sound that bad to me anyway. What was the point? I have no one now.
"Sir?" Someone shook my shoulder gently. "Hey, can you hear me?"
I slowly opened my eyes, realising I must have passed out. My head was fuzzy and hurt, and everything was blurry. It was night now.
Vaguely I could make out the shape of a girl crouching next to me in the pouring rain, holding my head up off the road so I was partially lying on her lap.
"What happened? Do you need to go to the hospital?" she asked. Her voice was as sweet as honey and I could hear the worry in it.
"N-no," I stammered, trying to stop my teeth from chattering. "I-I j-just n-need to g-go home." I tried to sit up but everything ached and my head spun. Bile rose in my throat.
She grabbed me, steadying me. "Just be careful, alright? Where's home? Can I call you a taxi or something?"
As she spoke realisation sunk in. I had no home now.
I slowly shook my head, dread uncurling in my stomach.
She sat next to me, holding me upright. "What's your name?"
"E-Edward…" I looked away, ashamed. Why was she wasting her time on me?
"I'm Bella." She rubbed my side. "Where do you live, Edward?"
"Nowhere," I whispered, moving to hug my legs, desperate to get some warmth back into my body.
She frowned and fell silent for a moment. "I live just over there," she pointed across the street. "How about you come in and get warm?"
"I can't," I answered quickly, mostly not wanting to trouble her.
"Why not?" she challenged, smiling softly. "It doesn't look like you have anywhere else to be tonight." She stood and then gave me her hand. "Come on, I'm not leaving you here in this weather."
Shakily I climbed to my feet.
She wrapped her arm around my waist and pulled me toward her door.
