Later he won't remember how his heart raced faster than his bike down the highway. He won't recall how difficult it was to squeeze any air into his lungs as the panic choked him with icy vicious fingers. He will have no memory of how he screamed and broken, fell to the dock, surrounded by his brothers, or even how he got home later. All he will recall with unmitigated clarity is the weight of his failure. His son, the gift that he hadn't been ready for, hadn't known he needed, had been taken. And it was completely his fault.
