Baby

Sara makes a surprising discovery.

Thanks to my faithful team, Joan and Lori, for their input.

Sara was aware, somewhere in her state of semi-sleep, that she was being watched. With effort, she opened one eye to see Grissom watching her with a broad smile splitting his face. Although their lovemaking had been amazing, as usual, it didn't rank in the realm warranting the grin he currently possessed.

"What?"

"You called me 'baby' while we were making love."

Sara's eyes shot open, now fully awake.

Painfully aware that the entire lab knew of her slip at a crime scene, and certain that Grissom also knew, she had carefully avoided calling him that. Grissom was so much better than Hank, she didn't want to use the same endearment. She had no desire for Grissom and Hank to be in the same sphere of consciousness. Still, it was such a sweet word and conveyed so much in so many ways. In the throes of passion, she had apparently slipped - again.

Yet Grissom didn't seem upset. On the contrary, he seemed positively ecstatic. Sara rolled over onto her side, facing Grissom, her head propped on her hand.

"I don't understand," Sara ventured.

"A few years ago, I overheard Warrick telling Nick in the break room that you had called Hank 'baby' at a crime scene." Sara averted her eyes, embarrassed. "They laughed about the faux pas. But Nick commented, and I could tell it was from the heart, that it seemed the relationship was going well and he was really happy for you.

"I wanted to be happy for you, too. I argued with myself that I should be happy for you. But how could I, when I fervently wished that it was me you were calling 'baby'. It was inappropriate for me to be thinking that way, especially since I wasn't emotionally able to pursue a relationship with you at that time. With effort, I put it out of my mind. Consciously. But in every dream of you that crept into my unconscious ever since, you've called me 'baby'.

"And today, the dream became reality!"

Sara wasn't sure what to say. What she had carefully avoided was what he had secretly desired.

"Grissom, you know that Hank meant nothing to me, don't you? He was a casual flirtation that could never have been more because of the way I feel about you. That, and because he was a lying cheat."

They both snickered.

"Maybe. But today, I'm your baby."

"And you always will be."

Grissom moved closer and kissed Sara tenderly. Opening his mouth, he deepened the kiss. When he reached around and grabbed her ass, pulling her close, his erection became very obvious.

Sara pulled back and looked down in surprise. "So soon?"

Grissom smiled broadly. "Today I can do anything. I'm your baby!"
