Chapter One : Candles

Remus' POV

Glowing. That was exactly how to describe it. Remus watched as she absentmindedly picked up, opened and put down a book. Noticing him watching, she turned. "What?" Tonks demanded, her hair a violent red.

"You're… Glowing." The second he'd said it, he'd regretted the words. It sounded awestruck, approving, like he was complimenting that… Thing.

Instantly, her hair returned to the bright bubble-gum pink, and a slightly gooey expression took over her face. "Pregnancy. Some sort of hormone, I don't understand, like the rest of it. I'll ask Molly when we start telling everyone." At this, Remus smiled wryly- if there was anyone that would know about that, it would be Molly Weasley. He shook his head, looking around the dimly lit room.

"Dora… Why are there lanterns?" He asked, confused. "Why not just use the light switches?"

Tonks sat down beside him, sinking into the soft pillows. "I like candlelight. It's gentle. And flickery. And kind of beautiful. I just prefer it," she said, shrugging.

She was so beautiful, his wife. His beautiful, sweet, kind, loving wife, who… No. He couldn't do this, think about how wonderful she was. If he did, he would be there forever, and wouldn't be able to do this. What he was about to do to his beautiful, sweet, kin-

"Dor… Tonks. There's something we need to talk about. Rather, you need to know." Her brows furrowed, and she crossed her arms. What I've done… Marrying you… Creating a… It's not right. And I'm very, very sorry. I should never have inflicted myself, or this life on you. On either of you." His eyes strayed towards her stomach. "I really cannot apologise enough."

"Remus!" Tonks cried, her eyes wide and brimming with tears. "No! Don't say those things! They aren't tru-" He closed her lips, kissing them softly.

"You can't stay here Dora. I'm going- to where I can save you, and Harry. And you're going, to somewhere you're safe, from me, from all of this." He said it all calmly, almost robotic he was so controlled, but afterwards, his breathing was loud, and jagged. His eyes were empty as they looked into Tonks' wide, shocked ones.

"…Remus… No… Why…." She whispered, her words trailing off.

"You'll be safe at your mother's. She'll take care of you. I'm doing this for the best."

Suddenly, Tonks' tiny, glowing frame jumped into action, the figure of rage. She slapped him, and tore from the room, sobbing and swearing in equal measure. The last sight of his cheery, beautiful wife Remus had locked in his mind was her pale, grief-stricken face, tears streaming from her wild eyes. Her mother and father would pick her up, take care of her. She would be fine. Eventually. He couldn't help it. It had to be done. As he left, Remus briskly extinguished the candles.

The glow had gone.
