Author's Note: This is a fic from my collection of tumblr exclusives but this one turned out a little longer than it was inicially intended. I decided to post it here too due to the lack of fics for this ship. I just hope you guys enjoy it! BTW, this hasn't been beta'd like my other story "Back to Reality" so I take full responsability for all the mistakes you may encounter =)
Warning: I believe this is the fluffiest peace I've written for this pairing but there's still a little bit of my beloved angst!
II – Nighttime
She laid in his arms, her face placed carefully on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Her wavy brown hair was spread beautifully on his chest, tickling his chin. He loved these moments, when the kids were already tucked into bed and he made love to her in the silence of the night; her soft moans muffled on the crock of his neck, her skin melting into his calloused hands.
But tonight was different. Ariadne felt a certain stiffness to his muscles that usually wasn't there. A silent rejection…
"What's wrong, Dom?" she asked absently, trying not to show her disappointment.
He considered lying to her, but she always saw through his lies. A feature that was both frightening and comforting. It gave him a sense of belonging that he hadn't felt in a very long time.
Since…
"Mal."
The way her name came out of his mouth, as if it was silk against soft skin, made her whole body shiver in fear. Fear of losing him to her after fighting so hard for this. She knew his deceased wife would always be a part of him, a part of them. Ariadne had to always live under her shade. But she had accepted it, for him. Because she loved him beyond reason…
He sensed her unmoving distance, making him regret for the first time telling her the truth. "I'm sorry…" he hesitated, feeling her body suddenly colder, "I never lied to you. I wasn't going to start now." he whispered before pulling her closer to him.
His confession made her relax a little bit. She could always rely on his honesty for better or worse.
"It's been four years since she-"
"I know." she cut him off with the gentlest tone.
He loved the way she understood him without even trying. They were like a chemical equation, mathematical, working in its own twisted way.
She shifted in his arms, letting her lips caress his chest. She pulled herself up, her chin resting on her hands, settling her eyes on his. His tangled hair made him look younger, boyish even. But his eyes were his undoing. She could always tell that they had seen too much, and lost way more…
She was about to give him a speech about the fact that she knew he would never forget his wife and that she accepted the fact that she was still a part of him, but decided otherwise. Because, even though she understood, it still hurt like hell to know that he had had another half and that she would never have him as a whole.
The sadness in her eyes made his insides twist painfully. He cocked his head to have a good look at her quiet beauty and his hand moved up to cup her face and caress her cheek. His thumb traced her heart shaped lips.
Her eyes closed in content. He was coming back to her.
"You have no idea how much I'm thankful to you… for being here." he told her, looking deeply into her eyes, as if trying to pour the information directly into her mind.
She smiled, her eyes sparkling with emotion.
"You have no idea how much I need you." His voice wore a determination that she had never heard before.
She leaned down and kissed him on the lips, slowly but passionately. "I love you." she whispered against his lips.
He kissed her nose, smiling. "I love you too."
