Inuyasha sat in front of a campfire in the middle of a forest. Naraku was dead, allowing the group to relax and live their own lives. Kagome, to everyone's surprise, had returned to her own time for good. She would miss all of her friends there in the Feudal Era but had finally realized that she did not belong there. Kikyo had once again moved on from the world of the living, pulling Naraku into the depths of hell and finally ending the fighting. Miroku and Sango had decided to settle down in Kaede's village and live their lives together now that the cursed hole in the monk's left hand had disappeared. Shippo was currently staying with then because Inuyasha had quickly left the village after Kagome had disappeared through the well for the last time.

This is why the half demon now sat alone in front of a campfire in a forest. He had no one left. He knew it was better for him to distance himself from Miroku, Sango, and Kaede because the three of them were human. Being a half demon he would out live all of them by quite a while. He wanted to take Shippo with him, but there were several problems with that idea. The first was that Inuyasha did not know where he was going. Second, he was pretty sure that the young fox demon could not stand him. The last, and biggest, was that he had enough problems taking care of himself. He had no idea how to even begin taking care of a young demon.

The hanyou sighed sadly and removed the Shikon Jewel from his left sleeve. Kagome had thought it was best to leave the powerful object with him. He was strong enough to protect it and no longer wanted to use its powers for selfish reasons. When Naraku had died, they had been left with the problem of the three remaining shards. One was keeping Sango's brother, Kohaku, alive and the other two were in Kouga's legs. They had been surprised when Sesshomaru had cut out the shard from Kohaku's back and had then revived him with the Tenseiga. Kouga had allowed the shards to be cut from his legs by Inuyasha, understanding that it was better for the people of his pack.

It had nearly killed Inuyasha when he had to do that. He had fallen in love with the wolf demon a while ago but acted like he hated him because the black haired male was always confessing his love for Kagome. Staring at the sparkling pink jewel in his hand, Inuyasha felt his heart constrict in his chest. No one would ever truly love him. He was half demon, half human; an abomination. Even his own older brother despised him. A sob tore itself from his throat, sounding strangled. Tears fell from his eyes like water from a waterfall. His shoulders shook with the force of his sobs. Clawed hands curled around the jewel tightly, hiding it from view.

A rustle behind him had his ears twitching, but Inuyasha did not move. He could tell that the person did not mean him any harm. The person settled behind him and strong arms wrapped around him, pulling him back against a firm chest. Inuyasha turned partially so he could bury his face into the other male's shoulder. The scent of musk, sweat, and wolf entered his senses, relaxing him. He did not know why Kouga was there but he was glad he was. The wolf demon wrapped his hands around Inuyasha's and nuzzled his nose against the top of the hanyou's head. The white haired half demon was unaware of the wish the black haired demon was making at that moment. He cried himself to sleep as the Shikon Jewel changed him.
