Hello Newsie world! It's nice to be back. This is my first newsie fic in quite a while, 3 years at least. I hope you find my writing to be improved as I have discovered proper grammar during my hiatus. This story is a time travel piece. I have in the past quite hated any type of fic dealing with time travel but after a 2 A.M. viewing of Kate & Leopold I was inspired. You will notice that I borrowed ideas and a basic plotline from K&L but the details are all newsieland. Please enjoy and review, if I'm going to do a T.T. story I want it to be good and that only comes with reviews!
It was the third Sunday of the month and as was custom Jack had brought several of his newsies into Brooklyn for a game of poker. They were well into their third hand and most of them fairly tipsy for 3 o'clock in the afternoon but nonetheless they were happy and carefree for at least a few hours.
Race was busy dealing a fourth hand while everyone muddled around getting more drinks, smoking, using the restroom or any combination of the three. Jack and Spot were talking business when a sudden flash caught Spot's attention.
"What was that?" Spot questioned immediately looking towards the window.
"Relax Spottie, just lightening. Nothing to be alarmed about." Jack joked.
True it was raining and awful grim for a spring day but Spot still squinted through the rain trying to coerce his eyes into finding something out of the norm. When he found nothing Jack smiled towards him and ushered him back to his chair at their makeshift poker table.
30 minutes passed and Spot still couldn't focus on anything but the window. Something shifted on the fire escape, Spot squinted and suddenly a young man came into focus, he was oddly dressed for the rain and appeared to be holding an immensely tiny camera.
"Hey Jackie. You see that kid out there?" Spot leaned closer towards the window.
"Lightening Spot, I already told you." Jack huffed not even bothering to look up from his hand.
Spot rolled his eyes, "Since when does lightening have eyes?"
"What?" Jack responded to no avail. Spot was already off of his chair and out the window.
The mysterious young man bolted up the fire escape with Spot hot on his heels. "Hey Kid you better stop before I catch up and soak you." Spot yelled through the storm. He followed him all the way up to the roof where he found the other boy standing on the ledge of the building.
"Whoa kid, I know you're a spy but you don't have to take things this seriously. No need to jump. Where are you from? Harlem, the Bronx?"
The boy moved closer to the ledge before looking back. "It was nice meeting you." He moved to step over the ledge but Spot leapt for him instead in a selfless effort to save him. Spot hadn't bargained on other boy being larger than him, heavier than him. They both tumbled over the ledge. Spot closed his eyes and braced himself for the impact that never came.
Thanks for reading. I know this first chapter is short but it's just a snippet so that I can get some feedback and decide whether or not to continue.
Review Please.
