Prologue
The form of recently elected Senator Stanford stood beside the pool in the back of his new, expansive home. It was a clear, starry evening, and he stared up into the sky as if he might find an answer up there to his current torment.
"Master," the Kirin appeared suddenly, without a sound, and addressed the man from behind, "tell me what it is that you need."
Slowly, without any sign of surprise, the man lowered his head and looked down at the pavement below his feet. "I need to talk to someone...another human being. I need someone that I can tell who I was and how I became who I am now…someone who'll believe me, that won't think I'm crazy."
The Kirin blinked and bowed its head once. "There is such a man, Master, one you have encountered before he left the city."
The man turned to face the creature urgently. "Where is he now?"
"He has traveled to the lands East of the great waters."
"Can you find him? Can you bring him here?" The senator felt that he had been suffering this impossible situation too long to wait another moment for relief.
The Kirin's head lowered slightly, as if in apology. "I cannot force him to give you what you need of him, Master, even if I were to bring him to you."
"Please," the man lowered his eyes to the pavement and whispered desperately, "ask him. If he's willing, can you bring him?"
With a stately nod, the Kirin replied, "I can, Master."
The man raised his head to face the magical being with pleading eyes. "Then, please, find him for me."
