My Valentine

"Carter, time to get up." Dr. John Carter heard the familiar voice of the ER nurse Chuny, telling him it was time for his shift to begin. He rubbed his eyes and glanced at his watch. Sure enough, it was 6:45 AM, and he was on at 7:00. At least he had time to take a shower. After a quick shower, shave, and tooth brushing, he looked at his watch again. He had exactly 2 minutes to get to the ER before he had Kerry Weaver on his back for being late. He walked briskly through the pediatric ward looking at all the decorations adorning the hallway. Paper hearts, cupids, and valentines were a grim reminder of the events that had happened in the ER exactly one year ago today.

Carter couldn't believe that it had been a whole year since he and his med student, Lucy Knight, had been stabbed by a pysch patient. It had been the worst day of his life. Not only because he had been stabbed, but because he almost lost someone very important to him without even telling her how he felt. When Lucy had come to County General, Carter had found her much too perky, and way too eager. Slowly though, she began to grow on him. There was much chemistry between them, though both of them were too stubborn to admit it. Then the stabbing happened. Carter promised himself that if both of them made it out alive, he would let Lucy know how he felt. Carter's wound wasn't life threatening, and he was out of the woods early on, but Lucy's was more severe. She drifted in and out of consciousness all night, and there were a few moments when they almost lost her, but she pulled out of it, and 2 months later, she was back at work. Carter had told her how he felt, and it turned out that they had mutual feelings. They had been dating since April. She had also managed to land a permanent job at County General. Dr. Kovac had a wonderful offer for a job back in Croatia, which he took, leaving his position open. Everyone agreed that Lucy was perfect for that job, and sure enough, she got it. She was a first year resident. Now, she and Carter shared an apartment. It was great. Life was good for both of them.

Carter made it to the ER with 30 seconds to spare. "Good morning Carter." Said Dr. Kerry Weaver. "Morning Dr. Weaver." He responded.
