Lily sighed and leaned back, propping herself up on her elbows. She supposed she should be glad that they had this time to be together, with the war going on and so many good people dying. But she couldn't help but resent that this was happening to her family, that the madman was coming after her little boy.
Dumbledore had told them just a few hours ago that they needed to go into hiding for their own safety. Now, as they sat in the small grove of trees near Godric's Hollow, they tried to ignore the sadness and just enjoy what might be their last time outdoors for a long time.
There was a small pond nearby, its water reflecting the sunlight. There were fish swimming beneath its surface, now and then darting above the water as if they were enjoying some sort of game. It was so beautiful here in this place that she would have trouble believing that there was a war raging throughout much of the wizarding world, if she hadn't seen some of these battles herself.
"What are you thinking about?" James asked her, taking her hand.
"What our lives will be like now," she said slowly. "and what will become of us. And Harry. God, James, I wish he didn't have to go through this."
Lily sat up and looked out across the water, trying to hide her tears; she wanted to keep the tattered threads of her composure in check for as long as she possibly could.
"Lily, we will get through this," James consoled her. "I don't know how, but we will." He squeezed her hand in reassurance.
They sat in silence, absorbing the serenity of the scene around them. Lily could hear birds chirping in the branches overhead, as well as the sound of church bellls ringing in the distance.
"I love you, James," she whispered, finally giving into her tears.
"I love you too, Lily. And whatever happens, that won't change." He wrapped his arms around her and touched his lips lightly to hers. The kiss only lasted a few seconds, but Lily shivered at the depth of emotion behind it.
"James?" she said, resting her forehead against his and staring into his eyes.
"Yeah?"
"I'm scared," she said, her voice trembling slightly.
James wrapped his arms more securely around her as she burried her face into his shoulder.
"So am I, Lily. But we have to do this. We have to do this for Harry. I want our son to have a nice, long life. And I love you both too much to put you in danger; if Dumbledore thinks this is for the best, we have to do it. We have to trust him."
She could hear the trembling in his voice now, and she pulled away to see him wiping away a stray tear from the corner of his eye. Embracing him once more, she silently thanked God that she had such a wonderful husband, and that they had a beautiful child together. They sat like that for several long moments, desperately trying to hold onto this moment for as long as possible.
And then baby Harry woke up and crawled over to his parents. At the sound James and Lilly broke apart.
"Come on, Harry, it's time to go," Lily said, cradling her son close to her chest.
James smiled and got to his feet, taking his son from Lily as the little family walked back to Godric's Hollow.
