So I really love this piece. I don't know why. Some of you may not give my short story a chance, but really look into the words. Really try to understand what Itatchi is trying to say.

Inspired by Carl Sagan

They sat, in the orchard, counting the blades of grass,

And the leaves on the trees.

It was all they had left to do, after the raging war had subsided.

The dawn was crisp, and the early morning dew drops tickled their skin like soft butterfly kisses.

"Don't you ever wonder what the rest of this world looks like?" Sakura asked, with a leaf in her fingertips.

He watched her examine the leaf, and only grunted in reply.

"I want to see what the earth looks like from out there." She said, pointing to space. "Don't you want that?"

Itatchi glanced up at the sky.

He saw a small dot;

A high flying bird.

"Look at that dot. Imagine that's earth. Imagine that's home." He replied, and Sakura just laughed.

"I mean, I really want to see earth."

"Look again." He said. "On that dot is everyone you love. It is everyone you know, ever heard of, and every human being who ever was."

She looked out into the pale sky, and watched the bird circle above them, as Itatchi continued.

"Thrives thousands of ideologies, religions, civilizations, people who are suffering from unexplainable joy, or inexplicable pain. Every mother, every father, and every lost and triumph. Every saint, sinner, psycho path, and species un identified lies on that mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

Itatchi took a breath. "So, yes, Sakura. I would love to see the earth. But we are suspended in the idea that beauty is far beyond our reach."

"I guess you're right." She whispered. "Sometimes we don't appreciate the things that are near us."

"Far from the truth." He replied.

She furrowed her brows,

And counted the leaves on the trees.

The bird had disappeared from their view.

"We don't appreciate the things that we don't notice. Have you ever thought about looking at the world as a whole, instead of looking at is as its beautiful colours?" Itatchi said, standing up.

"On this earth, thrives thousands of future inventors, children, loving wives, and maybe even future lovers." He added, looking at Sakura.

"I'm not interested in love anymore. Your brother taught never to do so." She whispered in response.

His dark ravenous hair.

Eyes,

So dark.

Itatchi closed his eyes momentarily, and looked up at the bird in the sky.

"But in the end we are all just humans… drunk on the idea of love, only love, could heal our brokenness."
