Dear Padfoot,
I know Lily's writing to you, but I felt I had to, as well.
If you had seen Harry, you would have smiled. He was so excited when he found that toy broom.
But that's not what I wanted to talk about.
I wanted to say thanks for your support all those years I chased after Lily. I also wanted to say that you were the best brother I've had, because we were closer than brothers ever are.
Remember the first day we met? I heard Snivellus talking about what House Lily should be in.
I asked you if you'd leave if you were placed in Slytherin. You looked at me with a grim expression and said that your whole family had been in Slytherin.
I looked at you with a shocked expression and said that I had thought you were an all-right guy.
You asked me what House I was going to be in. I said, with a raised hand, "Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart, like my dad."
Before I said that, you said maybe you could break the tradition.
You did and we met some other Gryffindor boys our own age. We all ended up being best friends, but nothing could separate us.
You are still my best friend. Nothing will change that. Lily and I decided, after Harry was born, you would also be Godfather.
And I just want you to know that I would always love you, whether or not we were born into the same family.
One of the things I remember most about you was the way you looked during the summer between fifth and sixth year.
You had tears flowing down your face and you looked as angry as I had ever seen you. Your anger was worse than when you found out that Regulus had joined Voldemort.
I asked you why you had turned up, halfway through the summer, when you always came with me.
You said it was because you had decided to go to your parents' house.
You had had a major falling out with your parents. They were very disappointed that you had made it to Gryffindor instead of Slytherin. You were angry because your parents wanted something of you that you had never thought right.
We talked to my parents, who were more than willing to let you stay as long as you needed.
You said that you had the money to buy your own place, but had to wait till you turned Seventeen.
I looked at you in wonder, because I had never known that you had money, I always thought you were broke. Mainly because your parents didn't like the way you had turned out.
I remember that because your expression as you told me this that night was grim and sad.
I still wonder if you had ever had love.
Lily and I love you very much and wish that your parents had ever done the same. Maybe they realized what I could see from the start: that you could never be like them because you had love and sincerity.
Padfoot, don't think that I will ever leave you, or that you no longer have my love. Lily may now be in the picture and Harry too, but you will never be cast aside.
I still love you,
Prongs
