Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right
"When it comes down to it, trust is one of the most important components to any relationship. In life, trust is essential.
We are brought up on that old adage: 'If you love each other, you can get through anything.' Well, I don't know in what fairy-tale world that's true, but in reality, that saying is lacking complete truth. Love can do a lot, I'll admit that. But it can't do everything. Trust is the part of the equation that doesn't get mentioned, but it really should. Without it, no relationship, no matter how loving and passionate, can last.
However, trust just isn't enough on its own."
She couldn't believe this was happening. There she was, standing between two men, both of whom were handsome, passionate, and dedicated, and she was supposed to choose. She had to make one happy and the other miserable, and in the process ignore all her fear and doubt about everything that had happened that night. In short, Meredith Grey was being asked to make the most painful decision of her life.
Some women would envy her position at this juncture, having a choice between two such men, but Meredith knew better than to think of the situation as desirable. In the midst of the turmoil of emotions flowing through her, she recognized the moment as one of those in life she would much rather ignore or run away from. But to run away would just prolong the inevitable, and as appealing as that seemed, Meredith knew that ultimately it wouldn't fix anything.
She stood there indecisively, pondering her decision. She glanced over to the man on her left who was still staring at her, his eyes blazing and demanding her to choose him. She flashed back to what seemed like just moments ago when their worlds had collided and consisted only of each other in the dark. Her soul had thrilled to every touch, every word, every kiss from him, as it always had since she met him. She couldn't ignore the effect that Derek Shepherd had on her. Meredith could no longer deny that every time she met his eyes she felt like she was on fire and all she wanted was to welcome the blaze onto her skin. She loved him like she had never loved any man in her life.
Love wasn't the issue, though. Trust was what was delaying her decision. As much as she loved Derek, as much as she felt connected to him body and soul, she no longer trusted him. Her broken heart attested to that fact. So much had passed between them, and yet, had anything really changed? He was still married. Without some kind of reassurance as to their future, Meredith wasn't ready to put herself through all that misery again.
On the other hand, Finn was a man she could, and did, trust. Her gazed trailed over to him on her right, as he stood looking between her and Derek, and a wave of guilt swept over her. Poor Finn. She thought about his declaration earlier, that he had plans, and she knew she wanted that stability in her life. She wanted to be able to be with Finn and be a part of his plans. However, she didn't love him the way he deserved to be loved, and she was sure that even with time she wouldn't be able to. She would never be able to give up Derek.
Her heart belonged to one man and her trust to another. There was no right decision she could make. Instead, she had two wrong choices, and as everyone knows, two wrongs don't make a right.
How she wished that they did…
