Story: Just Another Conversation

By: Pigy190

Summary: Gale and Peeta have a conversation about marrying and losing Katniss. Takes place after Mockingjay, but before the Epilogue.

Disclaimer: The Hunger Games are not mine. Otherwise Katniss would have ended up with Gale. Or at the very least he wouldn't have been written of in a sentence. Also, Finnick would be alive. So yeah, not mine, I just play with the characters.

A/N: So this was just something that was bouncing around in my head and wouldn't leave me alone. Enjoy.

"So what's it like, being married to Katniss?"

"Everything I always thought it would be." Silence. "What's it like living without her?"

"I came back didn't I?"

"Yeah." There's bitterness in his voice. "Five years later and she still chose you."

"Only because you forced her. I was perfectly happy just being her friend."

"We were perfectly happy without you."

"Right." Silence.

"We were. Until you came back and ruined it."

"I came back as her friend."

"And now you're marrying her."

"You made her leave you."

"I knew she couldn't have us both. It never worked."
"It always worked. I would never have crossed that boundary."

"She left me for you."

"She left you because you told her it was me or you."

"She would have chosen you either way." I laugh.

"Seven years of 'being' with her and even longer of 'loving' her, and you still don't know her." Silence. "She would have stayed with you because it was the right thing to do. She wouldn't have hurt you if you hadn't forced her."

"I-" He breaks off. "She never spoke about you. Ignored us if we mentioned your name. She even ignored Posy a few days after Posy tried to force her to talk about you and Prim."

"She's not one to talk about her feelings."

"Unless it's with you." I laugh again.

"No, I just know her well enough to know what's going on in her mind."

"Right." Silence. "You'll never know her like I do. You weren't in the arena with us."

"Right." I mimic him. "I might not have been there, but I was there when she struggled to feed her family. I was there when Twelve burned. I was there in Thirteen. I was there when you tried to kill her. You might have been there in the arenas, but I was there the rest of the time." He doesn't say anything. Finally he sighs.

"Take care of her, yeah?"

"Of course. That's my job. Always has been." He doesn't say anything else. Just walks away. I turn in the other direction and head towards Katniss. Towards my future. A future I owe to him, or more so, the person the Capitol made him during his imprisonment.

A/N: Review and lemme know what you think. Even if you think it's awful!
