I missed two moons. James hands tapped the wheel. His eyes flicked to his friend, who sat with his head hung low, his chin grazing his chest. "I feel like shit," James said, running his hand through his hair and returning his eyes to the road.
Remus tugged at the sleeves of the coat James had given him. All of James' clothes had gotten too big for him recently. Remus continued to lose weight while James and Sirius worried.
James' chest rose with his breath as he clenched his jaw. It was his fault. Remus hadn't mentioned the moon, instead slipping out the backdoor of James' house before running into the forest.
"Did anythi-"
"Sorry, can we stop for a second? I need to get out," Remus interrupted James' question. James shut his mouth, slowing the car and stopping at the top of a hill. Remus opened the door and slipped out, leaving James alone in the car.
Leaning his forehead against the wheel, James took a deep breath. He leaned over and rolled down the window, "Moony?" he called.
No answer, a small trail of smoke floated into the car. James could see Remus's back pressed against the back door window, James' green jacket almost black in the dark.
Over the horizon, an inch of light peeked out from the other side of the world.
"Good morning, James," Remus murmured. James climbed over and got out of the car.
"Morning, Remus." James lit his own fag up, the tip of his wand shaking in the cold. He looked at Remus, who kept his face stony as he looked out at the sunrise. James put an arm around him and drew him close.
"I love you, man," James said.
"No Homo."
The corners of Remus's lips turned up and curled around the cigarette as he and James shook with laughter. James' head laid on Remus's shoulder and his hold on his friend tightened. James wasn't going to miss another moon again.
