Erik slowly began to approach the hysterical Meg Giry who was sobbing uncontrollably, holding a pistol to her head. "Diamonds never sparkle bright if they aren't set just right," he sang as he placed his hand on Giry's gun. He lowered the barrel to the ground. "Beauty sometimes goes unseen; we can't all be like Christine." His words did more harm than good. Meg completely lost it.
"Christine! Christine! Always Christine!" she shrieked. Her whole body tensed and without knowing it, she pulled the trigger.
The gun discharged, the bullet heading straight for Christine.
Raul was walking around the pier debating whether or not to say goodbye to his wife when he noticed Meg Giry drag "his son" to the edge of the pier. When he saw that she possessed a gun, he moved closer to the lot of people. Seconds after the phantom decided to approach Meg, Raul, seeing that the gun was aimed at Christine, threw himself in front of her. He took the bullet.
"No! No! I didn't mean to!" Meg screamed and fell to her knees, dropping the pistol.
Christine screamed as he fell to the ground with a groan then hurried to pull his head onto her lap. She began stoking his sweaty forehead.
"Giry, go get help! Go!" Erik ordered. Madame Giry complied, running rather fast for her age.
Gustave knelt next to his mother and Raul. Tears streaked everyone's cheeks, everyone's except Raul's. His expression was pained, but he was keeping his composure quite nicely despite the bloody hole in his middle, though his breathing was quite ragged.
"I'm so sorry Christine," Raul whispered. "I should have been a better husband. I shouldn't have done what I did. Can you ever forgive me?"
"Of course I can, darling." Christine smiled a smile filled with sweet sorrow.
"I was truly awful-"
"Hush, dear."
"Come closer, I beg you." Christine did as her husband told her to do. "Closer still." Christine repositioned herself to get closer to her husband. "Remember love never dies. Kiss me one last time."
Christine lowered her head and their lips touched in one final kiss before Raul went completely limp in her arms. She sobbed and looked over at Madame Giry as she came back into view.
The Phantom gently helped Christine up. Meg covered Raul with Erik's coat. Madame Giry comforted Gustave.
Despite the somber circumstances, Erik was quite happy with his victory. He had finally won the girl. He would be able to spend eternity with his one and only love- the only woman that had ever dared to kiss him.
Gustave ran up to hug his mother. "Father is gone!" he cried.
"Hush," Christine cooed. "He's in a better place now. And he wasn't your real father. He is," she announced pointing to Mr. Y.
Gustave ran over to hug the Phantom, accidentally pulling his mask off in the process. Instead of shying away, he accepted his father and placed his small hand over his father's deformities. Christine hurried to stand behind them.
