Hello everybody! I KNOW I should be working on Falling for the Enemy and all of my other projects, but this just came to mind and I HAD to do it! This is my first Detective Conan fic, and also, I must warn you, I LOVE weird and crazy pairings. You know… something different. So view this however you want. I am not ashamed.

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, I do not own Detective Conan. But someday I WILL get my hands on Aoyama-sama and get him to do my bidding! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! Lol, just kidding.

Also, flames shall be used to keep me toasty warm and cook marshmallows.

"When are you coming home Shinichi?"

"I don't know Ran. This is a really tough case."

"That's what you always say!" Ran exclaimed through her cell phone. Kogoro stirred slightly from his almost death like slumber on the couch but otherwise did not wake up. That's the life of an alcoholic detective who couldn't solve a case until a certain little boy named Conan Edogawa came along. Conan winced on the other side of the phone, almost scared by the way Ran's voice shook with anger. "Ran, look, I'm trying hard to come back. I'll be home soo-" but before he could get the rest of the word out of his mouth, Ran interrupted him. "You always say the same thing! It's not comforting anymore Shinichi! It hurts…" Ran's eyes glimmered with tears as she whispered "it hurts so much."

Ran then slammed her cell phone down to the floor and dashed out of the agency building, blinded by tears and her rising emotions. Conan saw her in a wave of color as she flashed by, moving so fast he could hardly see her. His heart felt broken, as he thought 'I'm so sorry Ran'

Ran couldn't take it anymore. The anger, sorrow, fear, and exhaustion she felt. All because of that one boy. All because of Kudo Shinichi. Why? Why can't he be here with her? Why can't he just take a break from one of his stupid cases and come and see her? It was Golden Week for Kami's sake! Couldn't he just see her, if only for a few moments?

'Does he hate me?' Ran wondered as she sat on the lonely park bench. She quickly banished the thought from her head. 'No! No, don't you DARE think like that Mouri Ran!' But she did. As she sat on the cold metal bench, she watched two small children playing together in the sand box. The park was nearly deserted, for practically everyone in Beika was at home, celebrating with family and friends.

The two, a boy and a girl, built individual sand castles. "Look!" the boy yelled!

"Look, I made it for you Suki-chan!" The little girl known as Suki cheered and hugged her friend. "The boy quickly pushed her off and said "Ewwwww, cooties!" They both laughed and ran off to their awaiting mothers arms.

'Shinichi…' she thought as she started to sob into her hands. "Come home soon." She whispered. "Neechan?" Ran jolted and immediately her hand swung out in a residing slap. She looked around and gasped to find Hattori Heiji on the ground with one hand covering his stinging cheek. "Ouch! Neechan, is this how you treat someone who has come to see you?" Heiji winced as he got up and dusted himself off. His usual SAX cap on backwards, sporting a pair of jeans and a black turtle neck with a jean jacket to top it off. If Ran strained her neck, she could see his motorcycle behind him.

"I…I mean… OH! Gomen nasai!" She got off the bench and hurried quickly to Heji's side. She inspected his cheek and drew in a sharp intake of breath.

Heiji laughed at the look on her face, and grinned one of his cocky grins.

"Well? Will I live doctor?" the kansai detective said mockingly. Ran did not respond as she looked at the mark appearing on Heiji's dark skin. "Oh, Hattori-kun, gomen nasai"

Heiji laughed. "It's no big deal! Besides, Kazuha's done worse numbers on me!" Ran touched the place where she had scratched him, and shivers seemed to run down Heiji's spine. 'Cool it Heiji," he thought. 'Down boy. She's your neechen. And Kudo's girl'

"So where's the twerp?" Heiji asked. Ran shrugged. "Back at the agency with dad."

She looked up at Heiji suspiciously. "And where's Kazuha-chan? I was sure she would be with you" 'Of course if she was,' Ran thought in amusement. 'She would kill me. Hattori-kun and I are wearing the same shirt again' Heiji sighed dramatically.

"Well, it just so happens she abandoned me for the week. Our school is having a Golden week trip to the lake." Heiji stuck his tongue out. "Girls only. So I decided to crash here for awhile."

"It's a bit chilly for that. Anyways, that leaves the question of what YOU are doing here, Great detective of the west." Ran raised her eyebrows. "Well?" Heiji chuckled.

"What? Can't a guy see his Tokyo friends?"

"It's just every time you do, you attract corpses everywhere"

"No dead bodies this time. I promise"

They were both silent for a moment, and then Heiji suddenly took Ran by the hand and lead her into the park. "Nani? Hattori-kun? What are you doing?"

"It's been a long drive, I need a good walk. Besides," he lifted the hand that was not already holding hers, and wiped a stray tear away from her cheek. "you've been crying."

Ran just stood there, not saying anything. "It's Kudo, isn't it?" he whispered, finally bringing his hand down. Ran felt the sudden urge to grab it and leave it against her cheek. Just let his big, warm hands stay there, but she controlled the urge. He led the silent Ran along the path, following twists and turns, until they finally stopped in front of a patch of roses.

"What is a promise, Hattori-kun?" Heiji turned to face her. "What do you mean neechan?" he asked, but secretly knew what it was. He just wanted to hear it from her own mouth. "I mean… what is a promise? How do you know it's going to be kept?" Her voice started to rise into a high voice. Her voice was growing in anger and sorrow that she had kept locked up in side. Like how a fire slowly glows as an ember, then can't contain the heat anymore. So it flares into life and existence, roaring and screaming, until that gentle dose of water calms it, and reduces it to a small glowing ember once more. Heiji was that water. Ran was that flame.

"How do you know he's going to come back safe? That he's going to come back at all!" Ran started to sob, collapsing into Heiji's arms, clinging to him as a last anchor to earth, to her sanity. He listened patiently, stroking her hair and murmuring soft words of comfort. Ran rambled about her worries, about her fears. She told him about how she and Shinichi grew up. She told him how Sonoko could drive her insane. She talked about her parents split, how her mom couldn't cook to save her life, how Kazuha had gotten mad when she accidentally wore the same thing he did. How she found Conan, how she lost Shinichi. She told him of every murder, every suicide and kidnapping she had witnessed. Everything up to that single moment.

She couldn't explain it, even in later years how she could have blabbed so much. She had told Hattori Heiji of all people everything about her. Even that she was scared of ghosts, and how she feared Shinichi was lying to her. It was like a little girl telling her big brother her most precious secrets. She had never had siblings, she didn't know. But at that time, she guessed this was the next best thing.

After that she slowly calmed down, breathing into Heiji's tear soaked shirt. Her eyes were red and swollen, her eyes watery and full of emotions. Heiji slowly lifted her up and helped her regain balance. She studied the roses in front of them "I feel so weak. Just like those roses" she said suddenly. Heiji looked at the roses than back at her.

"I won't lie," he said "You are much like a rose. You are very sensitive and can wilt easily under pressure." Ran's face fell as he said those words, but was surprised to hear his next phrase. "But you know what, you got thorns to. Your strong and tough," he looked at her mischievously. "Got one hell of a slap too" Ran blushed furiously as Heiji grinned. "You pretend to be independent, but you surrounded by others, and…" he hesitated, as if he were afraid someone would hear his words as a crime or a sin. "You're also beautiful."

Now Ran was a bit shocked. Her face became as red as a tomato, blushing so much, Heiji almost thought she would explode. "You know what Hattori-kun? You should become a psychologist." Heiji looked revolted at the idea. "Are you kidding? That would be awful! No thanks!" Ran laughed a full blown laugh because of the look on his face. Heiji stuck his tongue out at her, then looked at the roses and carefully picked one out. He gently placed it in Ran's hand so she wouldn't cut herself.

"A rose for an orchid" he whispered and kissed her gently on the forehead. The warmth of his kiss lingered against her skin, even after he pulled away. "Thank you…aniki" he looked slightly shocked at the new form of address and then suddenly let out a radiant smile. "No problem Neechan." He said happily, gently pulling her along the path up to his motorcycle. Ran smiled and looked down at their linked hands. He had never let go.

Well I hoped you liked it! I am a Shinichi/Ran and Kazuha/Heiji fan, but I tried this out in my mind and have decided I shall be the first person to post a Heiji/Ran type thing. YAY! You can see it as a sibling relationship, friendship, or romance, I don't care. Please R & R ! All flames shall be laughed at! (After I scream my head off)
