The little flying bison opened his eyes and yawned. He rolled around in soft hay looking up at the big brown eyes of his mother. She brought her head down and licked him. He almost rolled over.
The happy little bison looked around for his brothers and sisters. The barren room had a shining light falling down on him and nothing but darkness past that.
His mother put her head down to rest. He climbed over her feeling the warmth of her long white fur. His feet moved her fur around in hope to wake her.
She wouldn't budge. He ran up to her face and stared at her calm solemn face. He tilted his head. He touched her nose with his. Reaching out towards her he desperately pushed her, but she would not budge.
He climbed her nose and cuddled up beside her eyelid. He hoped that he would be the first thing she sees when she wakes up.
The little bison waited hours. The morning sun had lost its shine and brought on the evening. The baby had started to feel cold.
He tried once more to nudge her giant body. He let out a squeak hoping she would hear her son's cries but it had been hopeless, she did not budge.
The door creaked open. A light ray flowed in like gold. He looked towards it.
A young boy had walked in looking at the baby bison. The bison took him to his mother. The boy knelt down petting her nose.
A worry overtook the boy's face and he sat on his knees looking towards the dirty floor. He looked over at the baby bison and pressed his warm hands on his head.
The bison rubbed his head against the boy's knee. The boy held him tightly in his orange cloak. The boy's warmth had been the same as his mother's.
The boy looked down at the cuddling bison and smiled. He picked him up and took him away from his mother.
The bison had understood that he must move on. His mother was no longer with him. He looked over the boys shoulder as he carried him farther into the light.
The dark room where the bison's mother lay had sparked a golden ray of light upwards. The bison followed it with his eyes.
The boy put him back down on soft hay. The bison looked down and shed a single tear. The boy was quick to notice and cleared it immediately. He kissed him on the arrow on his head.
"I will call you Appa." He smiled at Appa as he curled up in his lap yawning. A twinkle of golden light rays fell on Appa as he slept. "I will take him from here," the boy said.
This began an everlasting friendship between an airbender and his bison.
