Author's Note: I'm a huge fan of both Samurai Champloo and Mardock Scramble. A few months back, I had an idea that if Fuu was born in the future, she'd live in Mardock City and be kin to Bell Wing, like her niece or granddaughter. She'd also be more adventurous, and like in Episode 3, would be a croupier. In a way, this is me making that come true, in an unexpected multi-chapter story. Enjoy.
Mardock City's Edo Sector shimmered in the burning sun.
Thatch roofs scented the air with the cloying smell of fresh hay, and the sound of sizzling meats and foodsellers hawking wares filled the air. Even though the sun had yet to dip beneath the horizon, lanterns glowed within entryways, casting shadows into long, black hallways, enticingly curious. For this part of Mardock, the world was older, hinting at a time of romance hundreds of years prior.
Fuu Kasumi, a girl of short stature, wandered the streets, clad in a vibrant pink and red yukata, cropped to fall just above her knees. She had paired it with black pants, black geta and orange accessories: orange obi, orange bangles, and orange socks. It was a true mix of past and future: a meeting of an older world with Mardock's modern grandeur.
"Hello, Miss Kasumi!" a seller called.
Fuu smiled, waving eagerly. "Good afternoon!" The seller tossed her a stick of fresh grilled yakitori, the chicken still sizzling. Quickly, Fuu caught it, fingers pinching the stick. She bit into it, gulping down the scalding chicken. She wiped the grease from her lips, glad for the treat.
Fuu clapped her hands together and bowed, a smile on her face. "Thank you for the meal," she responded.
"Always," the seller responded, flipping more skewers. "Now, go win yourself some freedom."
Fuu nodded and took off, running towards the gates of the district.
