Twist Of Fate

Pete scoffed as Clark stood across the street, leaning against the Talon door, flirting with Lana. Why didn't Clark see in Chloe, what Pete saw? Well, Pete should be glad. If Clark did, Pete might be out a girlfriend.

Pete turned, smiling as Chloe walked up the opposite sidewalk. She saw him, grinned, and waved. Pete's smile grew as he waved back, watching as she moved to cross the street. Out of the corner of his eye he caught a flash of something.

Turning his head he saw a sports car come speeding around the corner. Suddenly, it was as if everything was in slow motion. Pete turned back to see Chloe, still smiling, still coming closer. He looked around, seeing Clark still flirting with Lana. Everyone seemed oblivious to what was about to happen.

Then in an instant everything came to life around him. But now, it was as if someone had pushed fast forward.

"Chloe, no!" Pete screamed, turning his eyes to Clark. "Clark!"

Before Clark could register Pete's shout, Pete raced into the road. He pushed Chloe to the sidewalk, knowing he'd probably hurt her, but as long as she didn't get hit, he didn't care. As soon as Chloe was out of the way, the speeding car slammed on their brakes, but they were too late. Pete landed on the hood, smashing the windshield, and rolling all the way over the top.

Clark turned as Chloe screamed, realizing what had happened. Clark rushed to Chloe, not noticing Pete.

"Chloe, what happened?" he asked, pulling her to her feet.

Chloe sobbed, pointing into the street. "Pete. Oh god, no!" she exclaimed.

"Clark!" Lana said in horror, looking into the street.

Chloe pushed out of Clark's arms, running to Pete, and dropping roughly to her knees beside him. "Pete? Pete, come on, get up," Chloe begged.

Pete's breath gurgled as a trail of blood slipped past his lips. "I love you," he told her.

"No!" Chloe screamed, paying no attention to the crowd around them. "Pete, please. Stand up. Please!"

"Chloe?" Pete whispered.

Chloe looked down at him through her tears. "I love you, Pete," she said, sobbing.

Pete gave Chloe a pained smile, before shuddering once. As his eyes closed Chloe screamed. Clark reached down to her, putting his hands on her shoulders. Chloe turned her back to Pete and threw up, over and over until she was dry heaving. She leaned forward on her arms, sobbing.

Clark knelt next to her, putting a hand on her back, but she jerked away from him, turning back to Pete. "I love you," she whispered, burying her face in his chest.
