My head was pounding. A small pulse near my left eye, causing the side of my face to ache.
"Jump!" He yelled.
I looked over at him- his arms outstretched as if he himself was about to jump the large gap in between us. I sighed, my eyebrows furrowed against the blistering light beams. They'd catch us if I didn't make a move. A helicopter fluttered somewhere near by- the sky was dark and cloudy, making the lights in the city burn brighter. I could only see him in front of me, and if I looked, the road below.
All I wanted was to go to sleep, right there and right then. I blinked hard, not knowing if it was the wind or my own fear making tears creep into my eyes. I took a small step backwards, bracing myself for the leap. The wind blew around me like someone was whipping me with paper. His coat billowed out behind him, the city lights hazes beneath. His eyes lay into my wavering frame. I heard the helicopter zoom in closer, its wings turning and chopping the air.
Surely if I closed my eyes, all around me would disappear.
"Jump now!" He yelled, making me jolt.
Taking in a breath of the cloudy air, I took two steps back and pushed forward into nothingness. He lent as far forward as he could reach, trying to grasp a part of me. In that moment, as if time had stopped, I swear I felt something inside me explode. Light suddenly flooded over everything, including him and his tearful eyes. All I could feel around me was air, and the light under my closed eyes. Strangely, like a feeling of something in a dream, where you are so sure something is real, yet when you wake up, you know it couldn't have happened, I felt arms clasp me around my back. A strong and tall body, falling with me, the echo of his hearts near my ears, and the thud of a landing helicopter nearby. I blinked, but all I could see was brightness.
"I've got you". He said.
Surely if I opened my eyes, it would be just a dream.
