Both Sides Of The Mirror
By Rebecca Lakey (AKA Alicorn)

Sarah didn't know herself, or that she was slowly fading.
The goblin king arm was outstretched with a single crystal orb alight in his hand.
She had studied his face for a million moments in her mind, yet now, for all her trying, Jareth's pale worn face showed only grief and love. That, and nothing more.
(But it's only a dream, right?) She recited to herself for the hundredth time. (A dream I will wake up from. He is evil, he took Toby, he took me away from my world. If I cast him out I will be free..I will be normal..no one will laugh at me..I won't be yelled at...I WON'T BE HIS SLAVE!)
Jareth's face, glistening in the light like pale show, was the last sight she ever saw...before she had no true eyes to see...
"You have no power over me!" Sarah screamed

Sarah didn't know herself, or that she had died.
The young girls figure was frozen...unmoving..unseeing..unfeeling..
To the king, her eyes spoke cruelly in his mind.
"You could not save me..you gave me everything..but you could not save me."
Jareth rose Sarah's unfeeling hand to his lips and kissed it. A single tear glittered like a jewel pale down his cheek.
"I'm so sorry..if you had only known.."
Hoggle bursted into the room just then and sighed
" Your majesty told me to clean up around 'ere." Hoggle eyed the unmoving form of Sarah "Did this old thing finally give up for ghost? You and your spells Jareth.."
Jareth turned to the drawf in fury.
"Don't you speak of Sarah that way! She was a person, not an "it"!"
Hoggle sighed again and proceeded to pull down on one of Sarah's arms. In a flash of glitter and light the girl's body began to get smaller and smaller yet..until there stood a tiny two inch figure in her place.
"See only a music box dancer..."
Jareth's mind was far away however, as he gazed out the window wishful.
"She could have been real...she could have lived outside the mirror world I made for her..if only she had known I was offering her life..."
Hoggle said nothing to the saddened king, but sat the tiny music box down on the windowsill beside him. Jareth glanced down at the tiny whirling figure and smiled as the song from the only ball Sarah had ever gone to in life, rang though thee air... like crystal...
