The End

Looking over the ruined towers one last time, the two knew that their story had, at long last come to an end. Decades ago they stood on that same hilltop overlooking the majestic devastation of the city, believing that their journey was about to come to a close. However, they were wrong. That starlit night was only the beginning of their true journey. The memorial was a humble one, compared to the soaring statue erected in the center of Bevelle. Whereas the statue in Bevelle was meant to be an eternal monument to "The Final Summoner", this humble overlook was much more personal, and stood as a testament to the sacrifice inherent in the cycle of life and death imposed so long ago by Yu Yevon. On that simple hill overlooking the dead city of Zanarkand stood two simple objects that had been used to accomplish so much: A cerulean blade whose metal flowed like water, and a humble stave whose head had become a symbol of peace recognized throughout Spira. Embedded in the earth overlooking the tragic necropolis of a city, these two simple objects sat in silent vigil, promising that the Eternal Calm so many paid for with their lives would never come to an end. The two weary travelers sat there for many hours. Retracing the steps of their pilgrimage was not simple, even with the number of fiends in Spira drastically reduced since the last time they made their long journey to the north. But sitting there once more, after having seen all throughout the world the change that their journey had made, it was all worth it. Looking out upon the last rays of the sun setting upon the city that had so long ago marked the supposed end of their journey, the two couldn't help but feel a sense of grand accomplishment. This was it. This was the culmination of their story. And after decades full of happiness, sorrow, and ultimately peace, it had reached its conclusion. As the moon rose over the broken city of Zanarkand, two souls weaved their way towards the Farplane, their destinies intertwined in death, just as they had been in life. Their last wish was that the peace of this world they called home would never end. They dreamed of Spira becoming as the Farplane, a land of eternal peace. This last dream, their final fantasy, became the hope that guided the two souls toward their much-earned rest alongside their friends and loved ones. At long last, their story had come to a close. This was the end. This was the beginning.
