The Best Wishes

Six tensed as he heard the rhythmic click of high heeled boots on tile as Doctor Rebecca Holiday walked towards her lab. She was here earlier than he had expected her. He made a quick decision and inserted the small package into his inside jacket pocket.

"Good morning, Agent Six," the beautiful doctor greeted, a look of surprise over her face.

"Hello Doctor," he replied stoically as if there was nothing odd about him being in her lab before she had opened it for the day.

Holiday walked around the room, turning on various computers and powering up her equipment. "So, what can I do for you?" She asked, finally turning her attention towards Six.

"Nothing," he lied. That earned him a weird look. He cleared his throat and tried again. "I just wanted to be the first to wish you a happy birthday," Six amended. He pulled the gift from his jacket pocket and held it out to her. Six was glad he was wearing his shades because when Rebecca smiled it lit up the room.

"Thank you Six," Doctor Holiday gently took the gift out of Six's hands. She lifted it up to carefully inspect it, as if she wasn't sure if this was a prank or not. "You really shouldn't have, but I'm glad you did. This is really sweet of you, or shouldn't I say things like that to the Sixth Deadliest Person on Earth?" she teased.

"No, it's fine." I don't mind it when you say it. He left the last go unspoken. Six watched feeling apprehension crawl into his chest as Holiday tore off the plain white gift wrap. He held out his hand for the paper and disposed of it in the nearest green recycling bin. He turned back to Holiday when he heard her sharp intake of breath.

"Oh, Six," she exclaimed.

"If you don't want to wear them you can exchange it. I know that you don't wear jewelry often but the woman at the counter said that all beautiful women should own a pair," Six rambled. He realized too late that he had given too much away, Holiday now knew that he had gone out in search of a birthday gift and that he hadn't known what to get her, so had let a sales person get the better of him. He supposed there were worse things to let slip, but at that moment it was hard to think of anything.

"They're lovely," Rebecca assured. She set the box down on her desk and took out one of the small plain gold hoops. They held each other's gaze as Holiday fumbled around her ear, trying to find the piercing. Six looked away first and with a flip of a finger closed the black velvet box.

"So, how do they look?" Holiday asked turning her head from side to side, modeling off her birthday gift.

"They suit you," Six promised with a nod.

"Well, that's good to know," Holiday giggled once and smiled at him. "Thank you, Six. I couldn't have asked for anything better."

"I'm glad," Six said.

"Though I'm curious. We've been working together for years now and this is the first time that you have gotten me anything. I don't mean to sound ungracious but you do know that birthday happen every year? What's changed?"

Six crossed his arms over his chest and tried not to look as uncomfortable as he felt. He didn't want to admit that he had bought those hoops a long time ago and had battled with himself every year for the past five years to give them to her. It never seemed appropriate and he didn't want to give her the wrong impression. But after so long, Six found that he didn't mind if she got "the wrong impression" from such a gift, but there was no way he was going to tell Holiday that, so instead he said, "I wish you the best birthday, Rebecca," and left her looking stunned in the middle of her lab.
