Brushing off the bit of hair blown to her eyes, she noticed -- they were still just as curly.
Her gaze turned to the distance; the sun continued to set.
She listened; the people kept walking, walking...
The world will keep on turning, even after names have been carved fresh on tombstones.

"Ain't that right, Lieutenant Colonel," whispered Olivier, to the emptiness that blew her words away. "I guess it's customary nowadays for certain soldiers to be promoted two ranks, should he die in the line of duty. Geh, you might've even been Colonel if I were the seated Fuhrer."
An inward chuckle followed. "No, that won't be fair anymore."
But life had never been more unfair for her when she had to lose one such soldier, to begin with.
Shifting her weight from one unsteady leg to the other, Olivier looked up.
It's pointless, she remembered...
"It's pointless to love the dead," she more like seemed to tell herself, "but more pointless for a soldier to fight when she has nothing left to protect."
Nothing in the world can be purely black and white -- including the hearts of men.
...Or women, as the case may be.
"But when the blues get on you, it can't be helped that the sky curiously starts turning gray."

"Better yet leave before it starts raining."
