Paradise

There were people everywhere, surrounding them.

"Go! Katara- take the kids and go!"

"Aang!"

"Just go!"

He watched as Katara scooped their two children up in her arms, looking at him with her expressive blue eyes, hesitating.

Then she ran.

The crowd of people closed in around him, one of them taking the time to raise a hand, and grab his arm.

There was pain, electrifying pain.

Aang screamed.

Aang sat up straight in bed, breathing hard.

He looked over in the bed at Katara, watching as she took in deep, steady breaths.

Aang felt the whisper of a smile tickle his lips.

Katara was safe.

There was a whisper; it was almost too quiet for Aang to hear.

"Daddy…?"

He searched the darkness, finding a beautiful little girl standing in the doorway to his bedroom, holding her stuffed otter penguin toy.

Aang sighed, taking a deep breath to compose himself.

"Yes, Kya?"

"I thought I heard you scream…" she quivered. "Are you okay?"

So he had actually screamed.

"Yes, sweetheart, I'm fine."

Aang untangled the blankets from his waist, taking the time to get up from his bed and walk to his daughter.

He knelt down to Kya's eye-level, looking into her beautiful blue eyes.

"Are you sure you're okay, Daddy?"

He nodded. "I'm perfectly fine, Kya. It was just a bad dream."

"What happened in it?"

Aang shook his head and smiled; there's nothing like a child's curiosity.

He wrapped his arms around his daughter, sweeping her up off her feet.

He carried her to her room, keeping her cradled in his arms

Opening the door, Aang slowly walked into the room.

He laid Kya down on her bed, slowly pulling the blankets around his daughter, smiling as he flattened them out on her tiny body.

Deep blue eyes gazed up at him.

"Daddy? What happened in your nightmare?"

He shook his head, sitting down on the edge of his daughter's bed.

"Oh, Kya. There were these people, they came and they took you, and Bumi, and Mommy from me. I was so scared, Kya. You have no idea."

Her small hands twisted the edge of her blanket. "Everything's okay, now, isn't it?"

Aang smiled. "You're here, Bumi's here, Mommy's here. Everything's fine. My loves, my world, my life is fine. Of course, sweetie, everything's perfect."

Kya smiled. "I love you, Daddy."

"I love you, too, Kya."

Aang bent down to kiss his daughter on the forehead.

As he stepped out the door, he whispered, "I love you more than you will ever know."

He pulled the door closed.

"Daddy?"

He opened the door, again.

"Yes, Kya?"

"They're all just nightmares, right?"

"Yes. That's all they are."

"Then when something really bad happens, you'll always be able to wake up to us?"

Aang smiled.

"Yes, Kya. Waking up to you makes me the happiest man on this world."

Kya smiled, and laughed.

"I love you, Daddy."

"I love you, too."

Aang went back to sleep, and even though he kept reliving each nightmare of losing his world- everything he loved- he knew that he would always wake up to his family.

Aang would always wake up to his paradise.
