Bad Dream

"Are you hurt?" Adam asked his heart beating wildly as he tried to hang on to the cliff.

"No" Belle replied, her heart beat matching his. The moment he felt them falling his free arm snaked around her, pulling her up until they were eye to eye.

"Why does this seem familiar?" He asked, trying to make a joke and divert his own fears from taking root.

"We have been here before" she replied in the same tone.

They had faced death before and survived. He would have given up when Gaston attacked, but her presence gave him the courage to fight back. He was nearly dead when the sorceress came to him and offered his life back on condition that he would like out the remainder of his days as a beast. It was a bargain he took.

That was nearly a year ago. The first few months of their marriage passed by smoothly. Then somehow, the arguments started.

The servants, who had returned to their human forms, did their best, but nothing could be done. His temper was soon matched by hers and the castle seemed to shake when they fought.

"Where are you going?" Adam demanded.

"Out".

"You're not going anywhere".

"I am a free woman and may do as I please".

"You are my wife" he grabbed her arm.

"And you're my husband, not my slave master" she pulled herself out of his grasp and walked out.

The moment the door slammed, he felt his heart break once again. He thought that their love could quell the doubts inside of him, even that wasn't enough.

"She'll be back" his servant assured him, but after nearly 2 hours, she had not returned.

"I'm going to look for her".

He found her sitting at the edge of what had once been a waterfall, her face red with tears.

"I'm sorry".

"There is no need to be sorry, we've both been foolish" He held her as they both cried, the last few months had created seeming impenetrable rift between them.

Then they heard the cracking sound beneath them.

"We have to move now".

They ran as far as they could, but the rock underneath them fell, leaving them in their current predicament.

But that wasn't the end, the cracking sound continued.

"We can do two things, you can climb up ahead of me or we can swing up" those were the best options he could come up with at that moment.

Without saying it, they both knew what the better option was.

"Do you trust me?" he asked, not knowing the outcome of their decision.

"With everything I have" she replied.

She closed her eyes and clung to him. Adam had stopped believe in God since the first encounter with the sorceress, but at that moment, he said a silent prayer, hoping that they would get up to the ledge safely.

"I love you" she murmured.

"And I love you" he replied.

Their bodies were found the next morning on the bottom, the jagged rocks below had killed them both. He had tried to protect her, his body had taken the most damage, but she had died the same as he did.

They were buried together only a few days later, the servants afraid that separating their bodies meant their souls would come back to seek retribution for the separation.

He woke up in a cold sweat, feeling like he was drowning.

"What's wrong?" Belle asked, half asleep.

He looked at his hands and then looked at the rest of his body, completely human.

"Nothing, go back to sleep".

She returned to sleep and in her sleep, snuggled against him. He also returned to sleep, knowing that it was a dream and they were both safe and right where they should be.
