They are all slipping under his skin. He finds their affects on him showing in subtle ways, like his refusal to back down from a fight to appearing at church on Sunday mornings to hear Josiah speak. He even sometimes finds himself unconcerned over who will win or the possible earnings while playing a round of cards with them. It is in his subconscious dreams, however, that the truth is revealed. They hug him when he dreams, slap him on his back, and call him "brother". Ezra smiles while dreaming, knowing he at last has a family who loves him.
