A long time ago, there once lived a spider. He lived day by day in the shadow of a large tree. He hid there out of sight from all the other creatures. Every day he would lie in waiting for his meal to become ensnared in his trap. And then one bright spring day, he was sitting upon his web as he always did, when he happened to glance across the meadow just as the sun decided to let its rays shine down. It was at that moment his eyes saw the most beautiful creature he had ever seen.
A butterfly, but it wasn't just any butterfly. No, this butterfly's wings were the most dazzling of blue which bled out from the middle. A dark raven black surround the edges of the wings and down to the long delicate tales that extended from the bottom wings. She fluttered from flower to flower collecting the nectar. The sunlight reflecting off of that radiant blue making it sparkle like millions of diamonds.
She landed on a flower near his tree to rest her tired wings. The spider watched the butterfly, his black eyes so entranced by her beauty. It was in that moment the spider fell in love with the butterfly.
At first he could not find the words, his voice seemed lost to him as he retreated further into the shadows. Only to have his large body hit a leaf. The butterfly heard the noise and called out, "Who is there?" Her voice was like the softest flower petals.
"I am nothing of any importance beautiful one." The spider spoke humbly as he hid from her sights. For days the spider would speak to the butterfly when she came back to the flower beneath his tree. Every day she would ask of him to come down from his tree. And every day he would refuse. He was afraid that his appearance would frighten the butterfly and she would flee from him. A month passed, and every day the butterfly continued to return to speak with him. The love he felt for her only grew.
One day the butterfly returned to her flower and called out to him. "Dear friend," she spoke softly "please come down. I have words I wish to speak with you. I wish not to call them out so others could hear. For these words are for your ears and your ears alone." The spider was tempted to go down and hear what she wished to tell him. He drew close to the edge of the shadow but hesitated.
"No," he said his voice filled with regret. "No, I would only frighten you." The spider turned to leave not caring that he hit the leaves as he made his way up the tree.
"Wait please!" She cried out as her wings took flight. She flew up to the tree trying to find whom the voice belonged. For she had fallen in love with him, and she wanted desperately to see him. But the moment she came to the tree she was ensnared by the great web.
The spider heard her cry out and ran to help his beloved. "please, do not struggle." He begged "I will release you. I but have one request...please...do not fear me." He prayed she would not as he drew ever closer. The butterfly glanced up as his sleek black body came into the light. He came with in an inch of her his eyes black and lifeless as he stared at her beautiful self. His legs went to work to free her from his sticky web. Thread by thread it fell and soon her wings spread wide.
But she didn't flee.
The spider was stunned by this, "Why do you not flee from me my beautiful one? Surely I am a monstrous sight to your eyes?"
"No," She spoke as she moved to stand before him "No, you are nothing of the sort. For you are the one who holds my heart by dearest spider. You could have eaten me but you did not. You freed me from your web." The spider had never felt such joy.
Each day his butterfly returned to the meadow, each day she returned to him.
