Omen in the Sky

Prologue

All was still; unusually quiet. The sound of the gurgling river and the croaking of frogs where the only thing that kept a young white-and-gold tom from leaping out of his nest and alerting the camp. He knew something was wrong. Not the humidity that was thick in the air, or the pending thunder in the distance. Something else; yet there was nothing he could do. He rolled back over in his nest, trying to fall asleep once more.

CRACK! The tom leapt from his nest upon hearing the sickening sound of a tree branch snapping had jolted him awake. As he settled down, the throbbing in his head subsided from where he smacked it on one of the woven reeds that made up his nest. While licking his chest fur, a strange glow was cast from outside. He tasted the air for smoke, but only the sweet scent of honeysuckles filled his nose.

Slowly creeping outside, he saw that none of his Clanmates had been awoken by the giant flash of lightning. Turning his head back toward the glow, a beautiful star-speckled she-cat was sitting in the middle of camp. Her fur glowing with a soft silver light and her pelt was a beautiful tortoiseshell-and-white with stars scattered through. Looking up to the tom, she smiled, her blue eyes filled with sorrow and love. The tom choked with grief. "Oh, you have grown so much!" The she-cat said softly. "Sunspark, come here." She mewed. The white tom padded over to her and sat down. Tears where rolling softly down his cheeks as he licked the she-cat's face. "Mother, why did you have to leave?" He asked. She looked down at him with regret and sorrow. "I am so sorry my son. I didn't want to leave you, but StarClan was calling me." She told him, even though he knew that it was the greencough that killed her too.

Looking back up at the starry cat, Sunspark looked thoughtfully to his mother. "Why are you here? He asked. "Is there a problem?" His mother got up and started to walk around. She was stalling. "Dappledsky, what do you need to tell me?" He asked once again. She spoke in a very concerned tone. "Listen my son, there will be a great disturbance. All medicine cats from the three Clans will be receiving the same message: "The moon willturn red with the blood of the sun, and three cats from each Clan will have the power of one." Sunspark threw his ears back in horror of the prophecy. The blood of the sun? He thought.

Dappledsky turned back to him with concern. "Don't let it deceive you young one, this prophecy has more power than you expect." She told him, as her pelt faded into the inky blackness of the night.
