On the corner of a street in Paris, at a little café sat a short, well
dressed young man. Christian approached him out of breath, with an
apologetic look on his face.
"Ah, Christian." Toulouse said rising to greet him.
"I am so sorry Toulouse, I -" Christian said. But was interrupted by Toulouse.
"No need for an explanation, I know you Christian, you are as good as your word."
They both sit. The waitress comes by with a basket of bread and water.
They sit in silence Christian staring at his hands on the table and Toulouse staring at him.
"So…..how have you been Christian?"
"Oh," he said, looking up startled. " Well, I'm doing alright, you know."
"No Christian, I can't even begin to imagine what you must be going through."
"Yes well-" Christian said uncomfortably.
"It's only been a month Christian-and I think you'll be surprised that I -"
"Toulouse!……co-could we not talk about that….. please."
"Alright Christian….. But was just going to say I think you'll surprised by reason I called you here today."
"Yes, your letter did seem quite urgent."
"That it was," he paused " The Moulin Rouge is going to re-open."
Christian paused from taking a sip of his beverage and stared at Toulouse.
"What." He said in a whisper. "But Harold. Satine was like a daughter to him, he wouldn't just-"
"Harry's dead Christian, he suffered a heart attack shortly after Satine ……yes well he-"
"Then whose behind opening up the Moulin Rouge again."
"Everyone…… the entire cast of Bohemians and……Harold.. Harry, turned the entire establishment over to you Christian."
"Me?!"
"So, will you do it?"
"Toulouse, you …….. you know I couldn't …..wouldn't . Not with out Satine."
"What if you didn't have to?" Toulouse waved the waitress over.
"Toulouse, what do you mean."
"Can I get anyone anything?." the waitress asked.
"No thank you." Christian replied not even bothering to look up at the waitress.
Toulouse began to laugh hysterically
"Toulouse, what, what are you laughing about?… Toulouse!"
Toulouse pointed to the waitress between giggles.
Christian looked up at the waitress only to see Satine, and in doing so fell out of his chair. Now both Toulouse and Satine were laughing.
"Wh-! How! When?" Christian gasped, rising to his feet.
"Just sit down Christian we'll tell you the whole story." Satine said with a smile
Christian embraced her and kissed her passionately. Satine moved her fingers to his lips, separating them.
"Sit, we can do that later."
Christian sat down and stared lovingly into her eyes, holding her hand as she and Toulouse spoke.
They told him of how Satine had faked her death as a back up plan in case Christian had shown up to the show.
" The Duke would have never stopped coming after me if he knew I was alive, if he couldn't have me he didn't want anyone to. He threatened to kill you Christian. I- I had too. For us." Satine explained.
"We were all in on it Christian. We felt we had too."
" I see" he said taking in the new information. " Well it doesn't matter now, your here now. Both of you, and it'll be alright now."
Christian felt so overwhelmed with joy. He began to sing.
"Oh the rhythm of my heart,
is beating like a drum,
with the words I love you rolling off my tongue."
Christian hit his knees. "Satine will you marry me."
