It was late one night in the Gryffindor common room. Everybody except James Potter had retired to bed many hours before. However James couldn't sleep. Once again his mind was too full of thoughts concerning a certain Miss Lily Evans, who as always was playing extremely hard to get. Strangely enough, one of the very things James loved about Lily was her stubbornness. The reason behind his perseverance regarding her, was something even James himself couldn't really explain, however one thing he knew for certain, he would never let Lily regret the decision to date the man he had become (if she ever made that decision!).

For the moment however he had another brainwave which, even looking back years later he claimed not to regret. Having made his mind up he strolled over to the foot of the stairs leading to the girls dormitories which he knew perfectly well he couldn't ascend. Upon reaching them he hollered Lily's name as loudly as he possibly could, resulting moments later in a very angry Lily storming down the stairs and poking him hard in the chest.

James however remained unphased through out her tulmultous ranting and raving at him about disrespectful indecency and only took her hand and led her over to the loveseat in the corner when her famous temper had finally blown over.Lily was so surprised by this action, that she even forgot to resist and upon seeing the sincere longing look in James' eyes allowed herself to be pushed onto the loveseat .

The longer she stared into the depths of James' hazel eyes, the deeper the realization that he had really matured sank in. The next thing she knew, she was kissing him deeply, passionately and for the first time ever, she wasn't even trying to ward of his obvious charm. Because she knew now how mature and sincere he had become over the years, she too letthe defensive wall she had built around herself crumble away.

James meanwhile, badly wanted to pinch himself to ensure he wasn't dreaming. Everything suddenly seemed so utterly perfect and surreal. He couldn't believe that he he was snogging the girl who had haunted his dreams, day and night for the past seven years.Yet beneath all the longing and passion he felt at that point, there was a feeling of inexplicable dread. So, to alleviate his worries he asked Lily the question that the feared the answer of, more than he had ever feared anything in allhis seventeen years of life. He asked her, what brought about her very sudden attitude adjustment towards him.

Her answer, was one that James never forgot until his dying day, despite its simplicity. She simply said, that he had changed and matured over the years and while he had changed in a very positive way her best friend Severus Snape, had not. So she had chosen him over the man who hadcalled her rude names and ignored her kindness. She chose James because the sheer power of his everlasting love for her crumbled her defensive wall.
