Please note that this Gakuen Alice fanfiction takes place after Mikan's memories were erased. I wrote it before the manga was finished, and I think it's AU after chapter 168 or so? I've edited it again, taking into account what actually happened in the manga, but also leaving out some things.

Chapter 1

A tall, slim, and somewhat lost Mikan Sakura was walking in the busy streets of Tokyo when she found herself in front of a seemingly familiar building. Her 15th birthday present from her grandfather had been a week long trip to the city, after she had been complaining for who knows how long about wanting to see the world beyond her small hometown. He had been very skeptical at first, especially since he couldn't afford to go with her, but he also felt that she deserved to venture out on her own, after having been sheltered for so long. Little did her sweet jii-chan know that she had a hidden motive.

Ever since she had woken up to the crying face of her grandfather three years before, the series of questions about her parents among other things had been never-ending. One of the secret reasons she had for wanting to go to the big city was because Mikan felt that she could find answers about her mysterious past there. She had serious doubts about the truth of the story told to her by virtually everyone she saw. Apparently, she had become seriously ill from a strange condition, and her treatment resulted in some unexpected amnesia. She had a constant nagging feeling, however, that there was something being kept from her, but she didn't want to believe that her grandfather would lie to her.

When she was mentally prepared enough to go back to school, another curious thing was that she still had knowledge of everything academic that had been taught to her during her "illness". If she really had been sick, wouldn't her education have been halted? Mikan recognized some of her classmates, but there were others she didn't remember at all, and she was overwhelmed by people that introduced themselves to her as her childhood friends. Nevertheless, she still managed to get along with everyone well enough and even rebuilt some friendships.

Amazingly, her amnesia didn't result in any change to her sparkling personality. Even throughout recovery, Mikan always saw the best of her situation. She saw it as creating a fresh start for herself. The only thing that had changed about her was her appearance, really. She had grown taller and become more mature. At a certain point, she also realized that pigtails were no longer suitable for someone her age, after having been told many times by her classmates, and wore it down with her bangs pulled back. In her small town, she was one of the cutest girls, and most everyone knew her name.

In spite of her popularity, Mikan Sakura pretty much downright refused to get a boyfriend. Many boys had confused to her, most she barely knew at all. Although these boys were charming and handsome, she felt that she was waiting for someone else. Someone she had known during the time when her health was weak.

"Hello?" Mikan turned around, startled, her trance broken, when she heard the voice of a man. At the sight of her, his lavendar eyes widened. "Mikan," he whispered. Yes, she was easily recognizable, even without her signature pigtails. Narumi was somewhat sad to see them gone, but his surrogate daughter was still a beautiful girl. He felt such intense feelings of regret and sorrow, as he remembered Mikan and the death of her mother, which he still felt responsible for and thought about constantly. He almost blurted out sentences along the lines of, 'Do you know how much we missed you?' and 'Natsume has barely been getting by without you' before he remembered that she had no memory of him or anyone else from the academy. Instead, he barely managed to say, "Are you lost?"

"Wow, are you a teacher here? That's so cool!" beamed the girl. "I wish I could go to school here." She blushed, realizing that she hadn't answered his question, and suddenly remembered her manners. It wasn't like this kind man wanted to here about her life or anything. "Sorry, I actually am a bit lost..."

While pulling out a map, she had the feeling that she belonged here and wasn't really lost. She was overwhelmed with emotion and felt a pain in her heart, which was suddenly beating very fast. Her head was pounding as she broke out in a sweat and breathed heavily. Just what is this...? Why do I feel this way? Is this my illness? were the last thoughts she had before collapsing.

Narumi barged into the Gakuen Alice hospital, where he was luckily able to find Subaru, the elder of the Imai siblings, alone. Narumi was, naturally, freaking out. He ran over to the owner of the Healing Alice while holding Mikan in his arms. Subaru looked down at the sleeping patient for only a moment before snapping his head up to look at the girl's former teacher.

"This is...?" Narumi looked at him sternly and nodded.

"What the hell are you thinking? What did you do?" Imai demanded. Was he bringing her back here because of his own selfish desire? Because he thought the children missed her too much?

"I don't know, I saw her standing at the front gate when she fainted. What else was I supposed to do?"

The doctor led the way to the nearest empty room where he immediately began treating the girl. He didn't get far before they were interrupted by rapid knocking.

"Imai, open the door before I burn it down!"

I forgot this is Natsume's room! thought Subaru. Without thinking and only concerned about Natsume's use of Alice, Narumi was the idiot who opened the door.

"What the hell are you—" Natsume paused midsentence when he saw the girl lying on the bed. Mikan.
