Dying Heartbeat
Prologue
Val sighed as she locked up the ambulance doors. The injured man inside had been involved in a bike accident. He and a young woman had collided. The young woman was unhurt, and Val could see her biking off into the distance. The man had sustained only a sprained ankle, but they were taking him to the hospital to get it looked at. Just another call, not any different than the others. Val was caught up in her thoughts when Tyler leaned out the door.
"Val! Coming or not?" he asked playfully. Grinning, Val jogged over. "Yeah, just a minute." She nimbly leaped in, climbing over Hank in the driver's seat. Tyler sat next to her. Jamie was in the back, with the patient. He lurched as Hank started the ambulance.
"Hank! Can't you warn me before you do that?" he complained. Hank laughed. "Just keeping ya on your toes!" Jamie grumbled something that Hank couldn't hear. The teen leaned back. "What was that?" he asked teasingly. Jamie grinned innocently. "Oh, nothi-"
BEEP!!!! The desperate honk of a horn sliced through the air. Hank had time to turn his gaze to the road and see a black SUV hurtling toward them. "Ohhh crud…" Hank furiously tried to swerve to the right, but it was too late. The sickening sound of metal against metal mingled with Val's terrified screams. The ambulance was knocked onto its side, rolling once-twice-three times.
The vehicle lay still, a mass of mutilated metal resting on its side. The SUV had crashed against a tree. It was still, the twisted frame wrapped around the tree.
Stunned observers stood, surveying the scene. A few whipped out cell phones, and some ventured nearer to the wrecked vehicles. Amongst the chaos, a horrified voice rang out.
"Oh Lord, Jamie, Val…..Oh God……"
