Title: Safe and Sound- Hetalia/UsUk Song-Fic
Pairing: UsUk
Song: Safe & Sound by Taylor Swift
Year Set: 1940, 1 year into WWII.
I remembered the silent tears streaming down his face as I quietly whispered
"I'll never let you go Arthur.".
"Why does Germany have to bomb my country? All the shadows will soon kill my light." I often heard him say. Why? definitely was the question though. How could another country put my beautiful Arthur into harm's way. Outside he seemed determined but, on the inside, he was broken and almost dead.
Every night he would curl up to my chest, his breathing fast and uneven.
"Alfred, please never leave me here alone. I need you to keep me safe and warm."
I would reply with something he used to say to me as a kid.
"Arthur, just close your eyes and hold onto me tight. I know the sun is going down but as long as we stay together we'll be alright. No one can hurt you now. By the time the morning comes, you and I will be safe and sound."
On the nights when he woke up, he would try and look out the window. I would drag him away before he could look outside. Arthur would be screaming and crying at the noise of the familiar whistle and then BOOM! of a bomb dropping. If this was his reaction to noises, I would never want to hear and see him watching his beloved city on fire. I knew that if he had just had a glance at London, he would scream and the tears would become even worse. The only way to calm him down was to hum or sing him a lullaby. Even when the lullaby was finished, he would hold onto it . He would try and wrap himself in it to try and feel safe again,.
Every time the night came, the bombs came with it. Throughout the night you could hear bombs exploding, people whaling, screams of young children but, the loudest and most terrifying of them all was Arthur's crying. Every morning, I would wake to an empty bed and a wet patch on the pillow where he had slept. I wasn't the one who's country was hurting, it was his, yet I still felt hollow inside. It was like a giant part of me had been stolen away, painfully and brutally.
The funny thing was, when he was still the same at the meetings. Even though he was in massive amounts of pain, he still looked strong and powerful. He bickered with France, got creeped out by Russia and ignored Canada, just like the rest of us. He was always so brave.
"Alfred, please sing your lullaby again." Arthur said to me one night, between sobs. I cleared my throat and began to sing.
"Just close your eyes,
The sun is going 'll be alright,
No one can hurt you now.
Come morning light,
You and I will be safe and sound."
His expression was calm and peaceful as he finally fell asleep. At last we both truly felt safe and sound.
Hiya~!
I wrote this whilst listening to Taylor Swift's song for the Hunger Games soundtrack, Safe and Sound. The song made me think about how England must have felt during the blitz. Hope you enjoyed it! Be sure to vote and comment and I will most probably relply.
