Everything Will Change the Same Way Again
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Jon was walking to the town square. He watched the execution of a pale slender man with a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, a woman about twenty-eight with dark hair and a freckled face, and a short man with a small beard and a scar on his left cheek. All thought criminals. Jon went home to Victory Mansions that day, feeling like justice had been served. After Jon got home he took a shot of some great Victory Gin before happily lighting a Victory Cigarette and sitting down to watch the telescreen.
Later Jon got up and went to the records department at Minitrue where he corrects false news from Goldstein. He saw a news article about an unperson named Syme, who the paper claimed received an honor for his work on the Newspeak dictionary. Jon knew one of the people who really worked on the dictionary and put the correct name in place of Syme.
As everyone was setting up the chairs for the Two Minutes Hate Jon saw O'Brien, a man that he knew little of except that he was in the Inner Party. Then Goldstein's malevolent face came to the telescreen. Jon immediately felt the anger well up inside of him along with everyone else. He naturally began to shout and through all the anger he saw O'Brien they shared a look, at that moment Jon knew that O'Brien was on his side.
After work Jon went home, knowing that he had changed the world in a big and wonderful way. Then he went to bed, knowing that he would make the same change again tomorrow.
The End
