Prologue
"Hurry, she's gaining on us!"
"I can see that, stupid! Just Run!"
The two males, exhausted from the near constant hiding and running from the past hour, hightailed a sharp left into a filthy garbage ridden alleyway, the rancid smell of decaying food and unmentionables doing nothing to detour them from the she-menace chasing after them. Or more accurately her goons.
How the fuck did she find us? We were safe!
Panting heavily both men skidded to sudden halt at the solid concrete wall now blocking their path.
"Fuck!"
"What do we do now, Dan? They're right behind us!"
Dan stared back at his younger brother, trying his hardest not to let his growing dread show on his face. They were well and truly screwed now. God, why couldn't she just leave him alone!? He was clean for God's sake, he went clean five years ago and never looked back. Dan pulled Justin protectively towards him, his face set in a hard line.
He'd made his decision.
Justin looked up at Dan with thinly veiled fear, his dark green eyes wide and his short brown hair plastered in a cold sweat on his face. Dan himself wasn't fairing any better, he was sweating so hard by now he was honestly surprised he hadn't slipped over it in the rush or something. Not that he'd ever be that careless, but still.
"Justin, listen to me, you have to trust me okay? Do you trust me?" Dan urged his brother seriously.
"Of course I do! You know I do, what are you saying?"
"Good. Than on my signal you're going to run, okay? Run as far as you can without me."
"But Dan, what are you going to do?!" Justin shouted, very scared now.
"Cause a distraction," Dan answered him grimly, glancing behind them as he quickly thought up a plan.
Justin opened his mouth to argue, no way was he just going to leave his brother all alone! They were in this together! But before he could speak a heavily accented American spoke over them.
"Daniel, darling, there's no need for that."
Both males turned to silently watch three thickly muscled men in expensive black suites emerge from the end of the alleyway, caging them in and blocking their only escape.
God damn it!
Abruptly the mountain built men parted to let a short, expensively dressed brunet walk in front of them. Dan immediately put himself between her and his brother, a sneer working its way onto his face despite himself. The woman raised a single, perfect eyebrow, her stormy grey eyes watching him in obvious amusement through her thin black glasses. Dan clenched his teeth.
"Daniel," she said, nodding her head at him in a very businesslike fashion.
"Dan, who the hell is she?" his brother demanded, looking at the woman with less fear in his eyes than he had before. No, you idiot, don't be fooled! She's a she-devil! Dan wanted to shout out him. Knowing better he faced her, faced the notorious 'Fallen Angel' in rigid defense.
"What do you want from me?" Dan questioned, struggling and failing to keep the hate out of his tone.
Angel sent him a toothy smile that did nothing to elevate his growing suspicion.
"Why Daniel, you think so low of me. I'm hurt you know, after all I did to get you out of that disgusting gang and send you to rehab for your heroin addiction so you could claim custody of Justin there…you have no reason to think me a monster."
Dan sent her a dirty glare, uncaring at the moment how she'd react. Sure, she had helped him, at first it had seemed almost like she was doing it just to be kind. But with everything came a price, and she was no different.
"Dan is that all true?" his brother asked, looking at him with no small amount of betrayal. Dan had never told him the true story on how he had gotten clean and got the courts to grant him approval for guardianship. He saw no need to bring that part of his life into his new one. However it seemed one could never truly escape ones past.
"Justin, I never told you because I didn't want you to get involved. You were too young to fully understand at the time and I wanted it to be a fresh start for the both of us." Dan tried to explain to him, pleading with his eyes for him Justin to understand.
"But Dan…" Justin said, touching his arm in a small show of support. He may be mad at his older brother at the moment but he understood why they never really talked about before. It was a rough time for the both of them.
"I have a job for you Daniel," The woman interrupted their moment as she clasped her hands behind her back.
Dan scoffed loudly and crossed his arms over his chest, making sure Justin stayed well behind him.
"I already paid your price, Angel, I owe you nothing. What makes you think I have to do anything you say?"
Angel's face emptied of all emotion, her eyes turned hard as her minions shuffled closer, flanking her sides in a show of intimidation.
"Daniel, it would be wise for you not to anger me," she told him coldly.
Dan stiffened and unconsciously lowered his body into a fighting stance, ready to defend him and his brother if necessary. The odds were horribly stacked against him but he'd be damned if he didn't at least try. Angel sighed dramatically and started to circle them, one finger under her chin while her other hand stayed clasped behind her back. Angel remained silent, watching the both of them with a creepily blank face and Dan resisted the sudden urge to shudder.
"There will be no fighting today," she intoned with authority, the kind of tone that was used to being followed without question. "And yes, you may have filled your end of the bargain at that time but what about your brother?"
Justin started, surprised at being mentioned at all. He may not know exactly what was going on but he got well enough know just how serious it was and to let his brother handle it. For now.
Dan froze, this thought not occurring to him before. While technically she only helped him she did also, indirectly, help his brother too. God fucking dammit!
"You bitch," Dan snarled, prepared to lunge at her right then in his anger. Angel simply continued to circle them, unworried about his mounting anger. The men in suites hovered even closer, no doubt to protect their master in case he decided to act on his growing violence.
"Bitch I may be, you know I'm right Daniel," she easily dismissed, unaffected by his anger. Angel paced until she was standing directly behind Justin, so close she could reach out and touch him if she wanted. Angel watched at him with a smug, calculating smirk, the placement of her body no random accident. She was silently threatening Justin. Dan ground his teeth and viciously bit his tongue to keep himself from saying something he might regret. Or that might end in both their deaths. The rustic tang of metal and salt exploded in his mouth as he drew a small amount of blood from his vicious clenching. Dan closed his eyes and took three deep breaths before speaking in a defeated, carefully detached voice.
"What do you need me to do?"
Angel smiled widely, her perfect, bleached white teeth flashing in a predatory manner. Dan had only a moment to ponder the oddity behind there disturbing sharpness before he and his brother were ushered into a discreet, black limo and being driven away to God knows where.
