No Ice-cream Cake

The park was her favorite place to be because it was Sonic's favorite place. She would go in the evening when children were heading home and take her seat on her favorite swing—the one next to Sonic. When she did this, Sonic always sprinted off, leaving her alone in the empty park, sitting solitary on her swing. This was the only time Amy didn't sprint after her hero, demanding that seemingly unattainable date. Instead she would swing gently forward and back and imagine that Sonic still sat next to her. And she would talk to this imaginary Sonic; telling him her hopes and dreams; marveling aloud at the beauty of the sky as it darkened, becoming spangled with stars; asking if he would be fine with an ice-cream cake for their wedding.

"Sonic," she would murmur languorously, as the weariness of the day settled in, "I love you so much."

Then one day, when Amy sat on the swing next to Sonic, Sonic didn't bolt off like he was running from some crazed stalker. He remained in his seat, eyes set forward and told Amy one thing, summed up by a mere nine words. But these simple words pierced Amy's heart, and the blood oozed out in the form of tears from the corners of her emerald eyes.

"You can't mean it," she said.

Sonic looked at her then. The truth reflected in his eyes, but knowing Amy would only accept this conviction through words, he said, "I do."

That evening, Amy sprinted out of the park into the ever darkening evening. And Sonic, swinging forward and back, was left by his lonesome on his swing in the vacant park.
