This story is for Emmy. I know in my heart that you are still out
there. And I know I miss you like crazy. I know that it's just like
your keyboard is broken. You can see us but you can't respond. Well
this is for you my evil twin. SNED and Euck forever Allie
We all knew that it would happen eventually. Graduation. But as me and Julie were packing up the dorm room we had lived in for the past 3 years. My side was haphazardly packed in boxes. Julie's was packed neatly in plastic containers.
She was sitting at the desk taking out papers that had accumulated over the years. She moved a stack of white school papers and took out several pieces of papers stapled together. I could hear the gasp rise in her throat. She turned and waved me over.
I walked over there and sat next to her on the bed.
"Remember this?" she whispered passing the papers over to me. The memory came rushing back.
"And the Ducks win the championship for Eden Hall, creating a new dynasty! Let the Bash Brothers, Flying V and the Lady Ducks live on forever!" The announcer had said. It was the phrase of the night. As the team celebrated that night everyone repeated that phrase as a victory yell. It was around 2 in the morning when we all got back to our dorm rooms. Julie and I couldn't sleep.
"Jules! We won! You, not missing a beat and me, flying past them!" I had said dancing around the room. Julie smiled up at me and went to her desk and retrieved a pink notebook and a pen. She flipped it open and started writing. "How can you write at a time like this?" I had said then bouncing over to her.
"Just recapturing the nights events, and the victory of the Lady Ducks." She said writing in her small cursive. I sat on her bed looking at her like a small child would.
"The Lady Ducks," I mused, "That's us." I stole the note book from her and flipped to the next page. In my big block lettering I titled the page: "The Lady Ducks". She laughed but I kept writing. Under it I scribbled: "Rules to being a Lady Duck".
That was the night that the Lady Ducks were created. It was me and Julie that night. We stayed up all night. Not thinking about class, not talking about boys, but sharing our love for the sport and being s female in it. We moved on to varsity and got a new JV. There were 3 girls on that team. Emily, Alex, and Cassidy. They became the newest Lady Ducks.
I snapped back to reality. I looked up at a now crying Julie. I hugged her around the shoulders. I looked through the pages then gently folded them on the creases. I stood.
"Come on, Jules, let's get these to Alex." I said helping her up and handing her a tissue. We walked to the dorm and gently slid the papers under the door and knocked. Alex opened the door as we were walking away.
I heard the door open but couldn't bear to look back. I heard a chorus of three whispering 'good-bye'. And I took off running down the hall. Julie was close behind me.
Another chapter of our lives closed. We would never forget about the Lady Ducks.
I'm 20 now. A sophomore in college. Just got a call from Alex, I could hear Cassidy and Emily in the back ground. They were all crying. They had just passed on the same pink papers to the next generation of Lady Ducks. I wish them well. To be a Duck is one thing. But to be a Lady Duck is something much more impressive.
