N/A: Recently some inspiration hit me in form of a beautiful wedding dress that I saw and I just felt like I needed to write a Shortcut. Not about my usual ship, but Kate/Gibbs from NCIS. I adore this series!

Don't stone me for mistakes, please.

None of this belongs to me.

One Day - I Promise

She was sitting at the dressing table, looking at her reflection in the mirror, without actually seeing anything at all.

Her mind was empty and barren. Her eyes were like deep tunnels, leading into nothingness.

There was just nothing left she could hold onto.

Kate Todd wrapped her arms around herself and finally allowed her gaze to wander through the room. Over the so familiar bed, the small nightstands, the light, gray carpet and the closet that snuggled against the wall.

Everything was at it was supposed to be; quiet and peaceful, but empty.

Because without him, the light was missing. Without him the sun was just deriding her misery and the blue sky mocked her.

The day, that was supposed to be the best of her life, had come and gone, and turned into the most miserable of all her days.

Because without him, there could be no beauty or happiness. Without him, every laugh sounded hollow and every joke like a tale of death.

Kate sighed and let her eyes rest on the beautiful dress, that lay on the bed - on his side of the bed. The one she slept on ever since he left her. It was her only possibility to be close to him once more. Though every night she slept on his pillow, she felt a little lonelier.

There is someone out there for everyone. And Kate believed that Gibbs had been her someone. The one to keep her safe and the one to laugh with and the one to love.

And to be loved by him had been the greatest gift of all.

But one little bullet could turn everything around. A small piece of formed metal, innocuous as long as it didn't get into the wrong hands.

Ari's hands had been everything but right.

Terrorist.

Murderer.

Those were the words that came to Kate's mind every time the picture of the cruel smile on his face after he had shot Gibbs appeared in her thoughts. As much as she tried to forget about it, she could not erase it from her memory.

Knowing that Ari was dead, killed by his own sister, didn't take the sting from the memories.

A sad smile on her lips, Kate stood up and walked to bed. She rested her hand on the smooth surface of the skirt and then traced the beadwork on the corset-like top.

It was a dream. It was what Kate had always known that she would wear, if she every were to marry.

It was still a dream. And it would remain one. A dream afflicted with a lot of memories; good ones and bad ones. Tales of beauty and tales of terror.

Kate would keep it. She would remember the time she had spent with Gibbs and she would cherish every moment.

But one day she would wear her dress. One day she would weave together the strings of her life. On that day she would remember Jethro, and what he had given her; and she would be happy.
