Cassie Cometti usually loved the rain.

The patter of it on the roof, the way it sparkled when the sun was out and the way it formed rainbows.

At that moment, she hated the rain.

The grey sky reminded her too much of her emotions.

Grey and dreary, just like her mood.

It reminded her too much of teardrops running down cheeks.

The tears she had cried when she hadn't won the Solar Blue finals.

After surfing her heart out, she cried.

She knew only two people could win. And there were six of them.

Bridget Sanchez, who was the practical, brainy one of the girls, only losing it if severely provoked.

Loren Power, the giggly baby of the group.

Guy Spender, the charming joker.

Charley Prince- the male version of Bridget, Cassie had laughed once.

Adam Bridge. Her prince, her knight in shining armour.

And then her. Cassie.

They had grown from acquaintances to the best of friends within a day, and for some, more than friends within a matter of weeks. They lived so close together that it was inevitable.

She loved Bridget and Loren like sisters. More than she liked her sisters, actually. They allowed her to have her own bedroom.

She loved the boys- they protected her like older brothers did.

Bec and Garry were awesome to all the kids- the fun older sister and brother, and yet they were the responsible adults.

And they had told them, all year, that there was only going to be two winners. A boy and a girl- no more.

End of story.

All six of the kids trained their butts off, hoping and praying and wishing they were the wildcard winners.

It had been forty eight hours earlier, but yet that was the only thing running through Cassie's mind.

"Bridget Sanchez and Adam Bridge".

Everyone had cheered hysterically for Adam and Bridget- they deserved it, they really did.

It was what Bridget had said after that had nearly blown Cassie into the water.

"I really want to go to university".

Loren and Cassie were thrown into the deep end, wondering who would get the award.

"We'll draw straws".

That's what Garry had told them.

With shaking hands, Loren reached for the straw.

It was long.

Cassie's wasn't.

"I'm so sorry Cass!"

They had both cried- Cassie more than Loren. A whole year worth of training and surfing to lose.

Twice.

Loren won by default.

Cassie hated herself for saying that, like she was betraying the girl who had become a sister to her. It wasn't Loren's fault she had grabbed the longer straw. It wasn't her fault Cassie was stuck back in her boring old hometown, where everyone knew everybody and people three streets away heard if you burped. She was back at home, sharing a room with her nosy little sister.

After the most amazing year of her life, she was home.

"Are you alright, Cass?"

Bec had put a caring arm around her, hugging her tight.

Cassie had rested her head on the older girl's shoulder, sighing, with tears running down her face. She didn't tell her the truth, though. She didn't say that her heart had been broken into several pieces.

"I'll live, Bec".

The raindrops running down the glass window in her bedroom matched the teardrops running down her face.

The weather finally matched her emotions.

Maybe it was for the best, not winning the wildcard. Maybe it wasn't her destiny to be a pro surfer.

Her life was in the hands of fate.

Because, just like the weather, your fate can change.
