Hey! I know I should be working on The Common Life, but I really wanted to do this...
Basically, each chapter is going to be based off of one of the song's lines. You need to listen to it to really understand (Google 'Better Than a Hallelujah'). Enjoy!
God loves a lullaby/in a mother's tears in the dead of night/better than a hallelujah sometimes...
Maria Fitzherbert was desperate. She didn't know what else to do. She didn't have a home, and she had a baby to take care of. She had no other choice. "I'm so sorry, Eugene," she whispered to the sleeping baby. She began to hum a lullaby that her mother used to sing to her. That was when the tears started falling.
She'd never be able to raise her baby. She had to give him to the orphanage. She had no way to take care of him; he'd be better off there.
God, please be with him. Let him have a better life than anything I could have given him.
She'd spend one last night with him. She'd put him on the doorstep just before the sun came up. That way, he couldn't possibly freeze.
She looked down at him. Her baby. He had his father's nose and eyes, and her hair. He had her father's chin, and she assumed his ears came from his father's side of the family. She'd never met his father's family. They'd only been married for six months when he was killed. They'd never gotten the chance to go visit his family.
Let him know that he was loved. Please, I don't want him thinking I—we—didn't love him. We just couldn't be there for him...
She shivered. It was freezing out. She hugged the baby closer to her chest. The sun would be rising in just a few hours. She only had a few more hours to spend with her son.
She stood up, stiffness in her legs hindering her movements. The sun would be up any minute now. She looked at her baby again, and made sure that he was completely covered. She'd spared as much fabric as she could to make his blanket. She'd done her best to make sure he was warm.
She lightly stepped up to the door. The sign read "Smith's Home for Orphans". It was run by a very kind middle-aged couple. She set Eugene carefully on the step, and rung a bell hanging next to the door. Then she ran swiftly into an alley across the street, wanting to see Eugene be brought into his new life.
A woman, Mrs. Smith, Maria assumed, opened the door, and immediately saw the small child. "Oh my! Why would someone ever leave such a cute little baby on a doorstep? Let's get you inside, so you can warm up..."
Maria had pinned a small note to the front of the blanket. She didn't give her name, but told them that Eugene couldn't be cared for. He would be raised at the orphanage, and, hopefully, get adopted by a nice family. Maybe, she would see him again someday...
Tell me what you think! I really appreciate getting reviews!
