rewrite! here we go.

Rin cried out as her head made contact with the wall in front of her, and fell to her stomach on the mattress. Haru backed off of her, pulling out and dropping her hips to the mattress. She curled up, clutching the top of her skull where it had smacked the wall. Something about the way she moved triggered something in Haru, and his body language immediately changed. White Haru was back.

"Rin?" His voice was softer now, less ragged and angry. "Are you okay?" His hands ghosted over her skull, and she whimpered when one of his fingers made contact with the already prominent bump, and the bit of hair that had become slightly matted by blood. "You're bleeding."

"It's fine." Her voice was oddly dull. She noticed with a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach that there was a small, dark red spot on the once-white wall. She swayed slightly, suddenly off-balance. Haru noticed, and his eyes widened.

"I'm calling Ha'ri." He stood up before she could stop him, and he was on the phone, talking in the slow but deliberate way Haru spoke when he was scared. She gazed at him from where she was on the bed, willing the room to stop spinning. It wasn't like this was a new thing. Haru was going black more and more often these days, dealing with more stress and schoolwork and Rin. Sometimes he'd yell. Sometimes he'd spit insults at her until she cried and he snapped out of it. But he'd always apologize. And she'd always love him no matter what. And he'd never hurt her. Not really. Not physically. Not like this.

"H-Haru?" She asked, trying to sit up. She heard Haru hang up and come back to her side.

"He's on his way." Haru said quietly, resting a hand on her back. "I'm sorry." He murmured, so quietly she could barely hear. "I get so angry." He helped her into a tank top and her previously abandoned underwear. He stroked her hair, ocassionally shaking her slightly, keeping her awake like Hatori told him to, until there was a gentle knocking on the door downstairs. She heard Haru thudding down the stairs. He always had her over when his parents were away for whatever reasons. The solitude was a blessing in situations like these. The less people saw this side of Rin, the better. She felt weak.

She heard the gentle thunk of Hatori's shoes, and then another dull noise as he knelt on the floor beside her, ignoring the discarded condom wrappers and the rumpled state of the sheets in favor of his patient.

"Isuzu?" Hatori asked quietly. Haru stood in the doorway, nervous waves practically rolling off of him. "Haru, can you go make some tea?" Haru nodded, and scampered to the kitchen, glad to have something to do to help.

Rin was still curled on her side on the bed as Hatori's hands imitated Haru's, gently running over her head to find her injures. She twitched when he hit the bump. Hatori was uncharacteristically silent. He generally talked somewhat during these appointments, getting things over with as quickly as possible by asking about the nature of the injury. His hands stilled very suddenly, and she glanced up at him to see the way his eyes locked on the small spot of blood on the wall above the bed.

"You have a concussion." She heard a quiet rustling as Hatori took off his suit jacket. "I'm taking you with me."

"I don't want to go." She said immediately. Hatori looked pained for a moment, but then regained his composure.

"For your own safety. Come on." He coaxed Rin up, helping her sit up and stand, and draped his jacket over her shoulders. Rin closed her eyes briefly. The jacket felt warm and safe.

She leaned against him as he guided her down the stairs. Haru stepped out of the kitchen as he heard their feet heading down the stairs. "What's going on?" His eyes jumped from Hatori to the bundled-up Rin holding onto him like a life boat.

"She's coming back with me for a bit. It's a concussion, and I'm not sure if you're in any state to take care of her." Hatori glanced at the bags under Haru's eyes, evidence of a series of rough nights. Haru looked like he might argue, but Hatori began walking towards the door again. "She'll be okay." Haru closed his mouth.

Hatori helped Rin out to the car, trying to ignore the pained noises she made with ever step. She relaxed visibly when he finally eased her into the passenger seat. He closed the car door as quietly as possible, and then walked over around to the driver's seat and started the car. He glanced over at Rin one last time before stepping on the pedal, heading towards the main house.

Twenty minutes later, she was being lowered into a bed. Hatori stood up to get some painkillers, understanding the discomfort she was in. The headache that followed a concussion was never fun. He was able to talk her into swallowing the pills and drinking the water, and she took the drugs and drank the water hesitantly, looking slightly confused the whole time. He finally allowed her to lay back and go to sleep, already feeling guilty that he was going to have to wake her twenty minutes later, to make sure that there was no serious danger. He scribbled down the time and circumstances of every time he woke her.

1:00am. She's been asleep for twenty minutes. She was able to tell me her name and age, but not where she is. She seemed worried when I told her we were at the main house, but she fell back asleep very quickly. I think it's safe to start waking her up hourly instead.

2:00am. She called me "Gure-nii" when I woke her up. I think she's too used to seeing me in a suit, and got confused. She was able to tell me her name and age, and how many fingers I was holding up.

3:00am. When I was waking her up, she thought I was Haru, but when she opened her eyes I think she realized her mistake. Just to double-check, I asked who I was, and she called me "Tori-nii." I don't think she's called me that in years. She was able to tell me her name and age, where we are, and how many fingers I was holding up.

3:47am. She woke herself up screaming from a nightmare. She answered all the questions correctly, but had trouble going back to sleep. I gave her more painkillers.

5:00am. Answered all the questions correctly. Drank some water. Went back to sleep very quickly.

6:00am. Answered all the questions correctly. Going to let her sleep, she seems to be in the clear.

The next morning found both Hatori and Rin irritated and sleep-deprived. Hatori had stayed up all night with her, recording the different times between waking her and her subsequent answers to the questions he quizzed her with. Rin had not taken kindly to the hourly wakings, but at least she was safe. While she would have some pretty serious concussion symptoms for a while, there was no danger of any permanent injury.

Hatori handed her a mug of tea, and she held it in her lap, content to warm her hands.

"Drink it." He said, his voice slightly gruff from lack of sleep. "You need to rehydrate." Rin lifted the mug to her lips, taking a few sips as she watched him watch her. Content that she was doing as he said, Hatori got up and went to sit down at his desk, resuming whatever paperwork he'd been working on earlier. Rin glanced around the room. She'd seen the inside of this room before. It was Hatori's office, but also doubled as a sickroom when he had a patient that he needed to monitor, but didn't want to take to the hospital.

The bed she was laying on was large, intended to be able to hold any Sohma in both human and zodiac form. The room was bright, and Rin found herself squinting in the light streaming in through the curtains. She placed the mug on the bedside table, and pulled her knees up to her chest, burying her face in the blanket to keep away the light.

"Do you want me to close the curtains?" Hatori asked quietly. She nodded into the blanket and he got up, closed the curtains and walked over to her. "Do you want more-" He stopped halfway through offering painkillers, something catching his eye. He sat down in the chair beside her bed. Rin tensed as he tugged at the bottom of her shirt, further exposing the thin sliver of skin between her tank top and underwear, where a dark purple mark had caught his eyes.

Hatori inhaled sharply as he saw the dark, Haru-sized handprints that decorated her hips. "Isuzu-" He swallowed, not quite sure what to say, emotion betraying him before he could slip back into being the unfeeling doctor. He pulled up her shirt further, a sick feeling rising in the pit of his stomach at the bruising on her back. He was immediately taken back to similar examinations that he conducted years ago, when Isuzu was small and her father was making the marks.

Hatori tugged the shirt down, Rin's face still buried in her knees. "Has he been hurting you?" Hatori asked, taking off his glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose. Rin flinched at the words, paused for a second, and then shook her head. Hatori knew she was lying, it was obvious, but Rin wasn't about to let herself be more of a burden, to let him try to take care of her and heal her, or whatever crap he did.

"I'm fine." Rin's voice was cold and hollow. "I'm leaving." Hatori stood up as she threw back the blankets, stumbling slightly as she stood up.

"Isuzu-"

"I'm leaving." She repeated, glaring at him. She didn't look very threatening, all skin and bone and bruises, with a lost look in her eyes. She grabbed the spare yukata from the closet, something she was familiar with and had worn multiple times when she was sick or injured. It was smaller on her now. She hadn't been there in ages, and had grown. She shrugged it on and started towards the door. Hatori grabbed her arm, she jumped, looking up at him with so much terror and confusion in her eyes that Hatori's grip loosened just enough that she could bolt, running out through the door into the courtyard, and then off through the gate. Hatori watched her run away, and then walked to the phone, picking it up and dialing a number.

yeah, plot's pretty different this time around, but same premise.
