A/N: For Megsy42's Random Characters challenge. I got Hermione and Lilly II.
Lilly's tenth birthday was going quite well. She hadn't gotten a single thing she didn't like, not even from her older brothers. Of course, she hadn't gotten what she really wanted either – a pet.
Naturally, that all changed when Hermione came to visit that afternoon. She carried a wrapped box with air holes, which indicated to Lilly that whatever was in the package was alive. "Can I open it?" she asked excitedly.
"No," Ginny snapped. She also knew that air holes meant a pet, and the last thing she needed to deal with was an animal. Bad enough the boys had nearly every pet that was common in the Wizarding world; Lilly already had access to several pet rats. Plus that, Hermione had a certain fondness for cats…
"It's just a kitten," Hermione replied. Well, that was that – the cat was quite literally out of the bag. "It won't hurt her to have a pet."
"It won't hurt HER, just the collection of rats upstairs," Ginny replied. "If another one of those dies, I may have a lot of explaining to do."
Meanwhile, Lilly tore open the wrapping paper. It was indeed a kitten – a very cute coffee-colored one. "I love it," Lilly chirped. "Let's see, what should I name her?"
"I could think of some," Hermione replied, "but I highly doubt your mum would like her old nickname becoming the name of your pet. Human names are taken – whatever you come up with is either the first or middle name of SOMEONE in the family."
"What about Fluffy?"
"That may have to do."
"Thanks for the kitty!"
"Thank your mum – she could have stopped me."
"I didn't quite know it was a cat," Ginny muttered under her breath.
